Could some one please explain the difference between these in simply terms :) and what's the difference about them in regards to editing!

Thanks

simply put RAW is just unprocessed data. So you can adapt the data at 16bit level. In other word easily change exposure, white balance etc.
Jpeg has been processed by the camera to the jpeg standard which includes some sharpening etc.
if you shoot raw you have more control over the picture for post editing than you do for jpeg.

try it, shoot two pictures, one in jpeg one in raw then download LR4 trial for free. import them and see how much more control you have over altering the RAW image.

more concise explanation can be found here

Thank you I will try that! My camera is set to shoot in both raw & jpeg so I will find a image and see what happens!

When I was first learning about raw vs jpeg, I was told this:

You've got 2 bookcases. One is crammed full of books and the other has a good amount of books but there's gaps in the shelves.

Bookcases = Photos.
Books = Information in the photos.

Does that help?

What would u say the best software for using raw images? I've been told Lightroom? I've already got CS5

Lightroom 4 without a doubt.
Rawtherapee isn't bad and its free.
LR4 is free to trial for a month, just go to adobe.com

Don't forget about Canon's free software they supply with their Cameras - it's not bad. And you can get any free updates that are available - might be worth you trying it out before you start buying ...

Cs5 will do a great job too!!

I will try the free download thanks

I've tried opening in CS5 but it won't allow me to open the images :(
If you're shooting with a 650D, you need CS6 for raw support. LR4 has it (and is the same raw engine that is in Photoshop, just in an easier to use format).

You'll need to update your installation, I think its camera raw that defaults to opening raw files.
But LR4 will do most of your editing needs and is a whole lot easier.

That's too bad just purchased cs5 lol never mind will try Lightroom x

The 650d shipped after CS6 came out so CS5 wont support it directly, it should hjowever work if you use the free DNG converter from Adobe first (this converts your cr2 to a sort of adobe raw file)

Well done Wayne. I always forget that as an option.....

Jpeg is like painting with a box of crayons.
RAW is like painting with a factory full of crayons.

You know when you look at a landscape photo and there is a beautify blue sky and how you sometimes see the band of blue as it fades and changes colour into the horizon?

That is the result of Jpeg.
