Yes
I want to start shooting in RAW and converting to JPEG (or other files).

But I want to know if one program is "better" at the conversion than others?

I have a Sony camera, so will the Sony software do the job better?
Or should I go for a big name editing package?

Or does it really not matter?

Your thoughts please.

Andy

Sony's own will do the job, Adobe camera raw 6.3 now does Sony files, as does Phase One Capture 6 Pro and Lightroom3
Phase One and Adobe CS5/ACR, or Lightroom 3.3 you can get thirty day trials to try..

OK, well I have Adobe Elements 9, and the Sony software.
What would be your "weapon" of choice?

One argument says that Sonys own software "should" do a better job than anything else, the other side of the argument says Adobe have had a lot more practice with digital imaging.
Personally I'd run a few pics through each and see which rendering you find best.

personally i reckon the sony software is better than the adobe

ive tried 20 different pics and 18 of which i thought were better with the sony sw

no not at all

it only takes a couple of seconds to change to jpeg

The software that came with my a300 it takes ages to render and I wouldn't consider my pc to be low spec.

ok i just done one of the biggest pics i have and it took 3 seconds

the spec on my comp is

Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition processor
8 gig ram ddr3

but it only took 18 seconds on my daughters laptop which is VERY basic
