I would like to find out what decent priced software £200 is high as i could go,that can handle raw format,I've tried the free software gimp and paid software photo explosion deluxe version 4 cost me about £40 and it was absolutely no use what so ever

Try DxO Optics Pro 8 ,its on offer at at £89 at the moment

Lightroom 4 it's really all you need for photo editing!
Download the free trial,if you like it pay for a licence!

Lightroom 4 has 33% off on the adobe site

Making it just over £80 I think, you will need to check as I priced the student version.

Look at elements 11 or lightroom 4, these are probably the most popular.

I have a canon camera but I feel the software is rather limited to what it can do

As Shaun says, you'll get lightroom and elements for your £200, you can do pretty much any photo editing with that combination.
