Hi guys,

Just a quick question about shooting in RAW and how much memory it uses.

I want to start shooting in RAW now as i've learned the difference between it and jpeg formats, also I want to get into processing my photos so i've bought Photoshop Elements to get me started. I know the benifits of shooting in RAW with regards to post processing afterwards, (recovering more details from photos etc.)

I'm off to Cumbria in a couple of weeks (centre parcs to be more precise) and obviously the camera is going too, i'll be away for a week and my question is this.....

How much memory will i need, roughly?

I'm aware that shooting in RAW uses more memory but not sure how much more. I have two 4gb SDHC cards and that's it.

Will this be enough?

If you only take as many pictures as it will hold, it will be plenty! :cuckoo::thinking:;)

Not sure how acurate the display is on a D60 (I used to have a D50 and that seemed quite inacurate at times) but set the mode to raw, and then look in the screen, it will give you an estimate of how many shots you can take.

for example. My fuji s5 pro, gives me 170 Raw shots on one 4gig card.

to offer slightly more sensible advice, if you're going away for a whole week and shooting in RAW I'd take more cards.

thanks guys

Shooting in RAW with my 50D I find RAW images are around 20-22 mb and I get about 170 images on a 4 gig card. You should be able to work out what you're likely to need from that.

If you have a 4GB CF card & it will roughly hold about 1500 jpg,s,then you will only get about half of that using raw, also depends on the size of picture you want to shoot

Too slow lol

I think your D60 is 10 meg and my D200 is 10 meg on the highest or RAW settings.

I work with 4GB CF cards and i find that i can get 240 (ish) RAW shots to a card.

2x 4gb = 480 shots.

Sssooo you either need a couple more CF cards or a Laptop to empty them on to as you work through the week :)

Enjoy ya hols

I get the same out of my Nik D80 and imagine the D60's same/similar...

C/Fs are pretty cheap these days... A singleton Sandisk 4GB or twin-pack 2GB are both less than a tenner per-pack in Tescos atm, and probably cheaper online etc too; albeit less convenient to buy with the weekly shop.

My advice, get a few 4GBs and go for RAW

My 8Gb cards say they'll hold 200 RAW files on the D3x, but actually held nearly 320 before switching to the second card...never actually filled both 8Gb cards yet before downloading to the laptop...

So are you taking a laptop with you? Just download every evening and there'll be no problem...

Not taking a Laptop as I don't have one. Think I'll just invest in a couple more cards just to be safe.

Thanks for all the advice guys

An alternative to a laptop (I have to admit I have not used one of these) are there are USB hard drives, which can take a CF card, and copy all the data to them.
I don't think Centre Parks isn't like the black hole of calcutta, I reckon you can probably get a new CF card there if worse comes to the worst. Probably wouldn't be cheap though.
