I'm after some advice on software for processing RAW files. I'm currently using PSE 8 and only shoot JPEG , but want to start shooting in RAW. Should I upgrade to the latest PSE or use the version of ViewNX2 that came with my camera? Can't afford Lightroom at the moment and assume that would be the best option. I mainly shoot landscapes and have a landscape workshop booked in April, so want to get some practice with RAW files prior to the day

Use ViewNX2 and see how you get on with it. If you're happy with it then there's no need to spend any money. There are those who argue that since View NX2 is designed specifically for processing Nikon it gives the best results.

:agree:

It uses the same algorithms as Capture NX2 but does not have all the extra adjustments so it is more efficient and therefore faster.

It has
Exp comp
WB
Picture Control
Sharpness
Contrast
Brightness
Highlight Protection
Shadow Protection
D Lighting
Colour booster
Crop
Straighten
Auto Red Eye
Axial CA
Auto Lateral CA

You can also edit metadata, batch process etc.

This is a series of 3 videos about Nikon Transfer, View NX2 & Capture NX2. The last part of 1 and the start of 2 deal with View NX2.

My advice is use pse 8 for not and upgrade to lightroom when you can. As a landscape tog myself camera raw is a great tool but the one with pse is rubbish. Light room is a million times better than that of pse12 even. Also you cant handle 16bit files in pse.

What camera are you ising? Will the files open in pse8? If npt download the free DNG converter from adobe.

Pse12 isnt an updrade irs just more crappy tools no one wants. Best thing I did was get rid of elements :) hope that helps

Did you get a copy of Capture NX or NX2 with your camera? I thought most Nikon cameras came with a copy? Capture NX2 isnt too bad at all and I have only recently moved over to Lightroom which I personally prefer. Would also agree the Elements RAW convertor doesnt really cut it in my view.

Aha did not realise that NX2 wasn't distributed with cameras. I bought a D300 a long while ago and had Capture NX bundled so just assumed it came with all models

Nah, Nikon is afraid too many come to know the program. The fewer the users, the fewer the requests for Capture NX3...
