RAW noise reduction in CS3

Hi, so far i've allowed CS3 to use the default noise reduction which gets rid of chromatic noise pretty effectively but is not so good with luminance. However today I whacked the luminance reduction way up (its default is 0%) and noticed it does a very good job of getting rid of ALOT of the noise. It seems to be the ticket (as i've always thought my shots look quite noisy, and only recently read about the levels function of USM which has helped reduce noise as well)

What i was really wondering is, does this impact upon the images sharpness and what settings do most people use when converting from raw (particularly with canon since it might be a bit different with nikon)
 
yes it does impact on the image sharpness, once i run any sort of noise ware i use the history brush set to a state before i used the noise ware then go over the parts i want to keep full detail in, hope i make sense im crap at writing. or you could use neat image
 
Different cameras using different ISO's etc will need different settings, it's a matter of trial and error, theres no "golden" setting that will work for every image. Personally I don't find the noise reduction in ACR much good, I prefere to use noise ninja, or noiseware pro. Wayne
 
If you can use the luminance channel for noise reduction then I would suggest that's the best way to go. Some algorithms do have a marked effect on image sharpness though.

I would second the Noiseware recomendation. I prefer the results to Noise Ninja. Also there is a free version of Noiseware available on the web site.
