hi, im not that new to digital but im new to raw! can you please help me,

when you shoot in raw can you upload them straight to mac or do you need to do something with them first?

also can you leave them as raw images or do you need to change format in any way to upload to the net or print etc?

sorry if i seem daft!!

Its best to shoot raw if you plan to edit or process them with photoshop/lightroom etc, if you want to upload the images straight to the web or print them, then shoot jpegs.

If you have raw files you want converting to JPG, I would recommend adobe raw converter, its free and also very good.

RAW is not a image format it is just raw data.
You can load it to your Mac or PC and can view it BUT if you wish to do anything with it like print or post on the web you need to save it to TIFF or JPG (for web jpg only)
The RAW file will not have any sharpen or contrast WB add but will have this tagged in the file so you can use the setting you had on your camera or you can change them after, this is one of the good points as well as being a much bigger file it will have much more info for you to work on
Hope this helps

Adobe raw converter is part of Photoshop. You might need to down load an update depending on the camera he was using.
If you open one of his files with photoshop it will automatically open in the raw converter.
You then make the necessary adjustment, and save in what ever file format you prefer.
You will then have two files the original NEF and the one you saved as tif or whatever.

If the NEF file will not open in Photoshop you know you need the latest up date... this is free.

NEF and you a Canon man He got a Canon as well:bonk:

Yes you can upload them directly to your iMac.
If you have Leopard or snow Leopard you will be able to view them in iPhoto.
You will need some post editing software to get the best from a shot, Aperture(Mac only) & Lightroom are very similar bits of software, Photoshop is a more extensive post processing bit of software and offers unlimited tinkering capabilities.
Jpeg is the most supported file format, but RAW offers more control over the shot and more creativity on the Togs part.

ok, think i get it, i do have photoshop and know my way round it ok.

one other thing, on my canon 400d there is an option to shoot raw+jpeg. what difference will this make?

Raw and Jpeg, are two images 1 Raw data the other in a jpeg format. Takes up more room on the SD or CF card. One other point, once you have opened a RAW file in PS, you cannot then save it as a RAW file. I don't know what version of PS you have, unless it's PS4 then you might have trouble finding the Camera RAW plugin that is required to enable you to see Raw files in Photoshop. HTH.

The good thing about the Mac is that you see the thumbnails as images in Finder and not blank files as i used to on my PC.

Just to make this clear
You will still have the RAW you don’t need to save it. It never is altered so no matter what you do to it after you open it You will always have it as you took it.
Any adjustment you make in ACR will be tagged to the RAW so when you open it again you will see all the adjustment you did to it last time BUT one point is you can put it all back to as taken at any time....
Hope this help you understand
