Basically for RAW read "SPECIAL FILE FOR YOUR CAMERA". Basically your operating system needs to have an update specific to your actual model of camera. In Windows when you double click a file type in runs the program setup to handle that file file.
What is your exact camera? Which OS are you using and which version? Which other software do you use?
Go to the makers site, go to support and search for "raw codec", choose the right one for your operating system, download and install, your raw files should then display in win picture viewer etc.
you should be able to open and convert raw files using the software that came with your camera, or other applications such as photoshop.
If you want to view the raw files, download and instal Fastone Image Viewer. If you want to process the raw files, you need a RAW processor software like ACR (coming with Photoshop and Lightroom) or others like the soft coming with your camera. You can also use some soft like Bibble Pro, Capture One Pro, Aperture (Mac only), etc
