raw files going to .xmp

in cs5 ive just started using raw

when i open up a raw file and make the changes i want i then click on open image and i can tweak it some more in photoshop with what ever i plan to do

but when i finish if i look at another image in the same file the previously edited one takes the file name above and i cant open it again why is this what have i done
 
the xmp file is a data file, your raw should still be there as well, the xpm stores the changes made to the raw, you can't open it by itself. Open the raw and as long as the xmp is still with it the changes made in camera raw should still be there.
 
Check your settings....
In Edit - Preferences - Camera Raw

thanks wayne i thought id lost the original lol should be more observant

its just panick sets in when you see that .xmp and it wont open it never occured to me that the original was still there lol
 
Nice thread find, I've seen these .xmp files on my comp an always wondered what they are, now I know lol :)
