Yes
To cut a long story short, my wedding photographer quit on me last week having done most of the work for my wedding but not producing an album.

He has given me 3 CD's with all the raw NEF files but as a Canon man, i don't have any software with which to see them.

Could someone kindly suggest some free software that i could "obtain" to be able to do so?

we use 'FastStone' Image viewer for batch conversion, its free software and fairly good. It sometimes does not like really large .tiff images say over 400mb but then we just use photoshop.

If you just want to view them, Faststone is excellent. You can easily tag your favourite images for sorting.

If you want to process them further then try the free RawTherapee. You will have to experiment at first to get the results you want but it is very flexible and powerful.

I use this combination all the time with my NEFs.

... you could try IrfanView with, if necessary, its Formats plugin?

I've just tried and it opens my NEF files.

Or use Adobe's DNG converter - convert to DNG and use whatever software you have.

I have a sneaking suspician that the earlier versions of DPP don't support DNG, and I don't have any newer version to check.
I'd go for faststone, you'll save out the DNG conversion step as well.

Alternatively Ufraw with GIMP.

Better yet, shell out just a small amount of dosh [£60-70] and get Elements with its version of Adobe Camera Raw; btw Elements 8 has just been released/announced so get that if you do.

Thank you everyone for all your assistance and advice. Just back from holiday now so will get onto google and look at all the suggestions you have kindly made and hopefully get some way to getting this sorted.

If you can get the job done within 30 days then you could download a 30 day trial of Lightroom. That should get you sorted. :)
