Yes
i'vw only got 4gb of space. i usually shoot everything raw and large jpeg but i'm doing a wedding in a couple of weeks- i don't normally do weddings so just wondering if

a)4gb will be enough space and

b) if there is any reason why i can't shoot just raw, rather than raw and large jpeg (as i normally have the camera set to)?

I always use RAW plus JPEG. I like having the JPEGs for quick reference afterwards.

EDIT: By the way, if you only have one card, buy a spare.

i am the main tog, but its not a big deal- its a small affair and they just want some nice images.

I've been assisting on some wedding over the last 4 weeks and am more than happy to do it on my own.

As i normally do wildlife imagery i don't tend to take hundreds of images so the 4gb of memory i have (2x 1gb and 1 x 2gb sandisk extremes) is always more than sufficient. Just wondered if i would struggle for a wedding with that space hence asking if its ok to lose the large jpeg file setting to free up some space.

Trust me it's never a small affair to the B&G and lose the jpgs - BUT - buy more cards beforehand at least another 2gb

I shoot RAW & Jpeg, like looking through the jpegs first to preview the shots. Agree with peoples comments, get at least one more card you always need a backup, play.com are dirt cheap at the moment for the sandisk's

If you have a puter that will work with the RAW files at a speed you are happy with, ditch the jpgs. Otherwise it may be worth having a small peg just to speed up the first cull.

..... and more memory for sure. If your 2gb goes in the camera for the first shot and doesen't work. You're screwed . :)

right i'll order another 2 gb card. I think i'm ok for batteries- i have 4 lithium ion batteries and some backup aa's for my battery grip.

think I'll shoot raw with a medium jpegs. my old EMAC aint the fastest at processing lots of images. althouogh the 1 gb ram seems capable for most PS operations.

I can always do a mini edit as the day goes on to free up some space if required.

Don't forget the backup batteries!
As I have a D50, I don't have to use raw+jpeg, since basic quality jpegs are embedded in nefs anyway, but I didn't use raw+jpeg before and never missed it and I'm attending a wedding this saturday, still going raw only.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I'm NOT the main guy, in fact, I might not take photos during the ceremony itself at all so that the pros can run around freely.
There's this party after that and there I plan on taking lots of photos ;)

newbie here with a few questions.

Is this a one-off or something you want to get into and at what kind of level do you shoot at the moment? (sell a few, just for fun/the love of it or wannabe pro?).

i'll be interested to see how things develop with kit and your experiences - i'm never going to be a pro, or even an over-keen amateur but i find the way peoples kit and knowledge develop fascinating. yup, i need to get out more;)

quick edit: even though i'm the best man at a wedding in a few weeks time i think i'm going to take my camera and one lens to try and grab a few shots as an absolute beginner - as long as the tog doesn't mind, of course.

Same boat here ! Wedding next weekend, and i am the main guy for the candids. There is a pro to do group shots (for the Grandparents more than anything) and the B&G mainly want me, I've told them (B&G actually are friends so I had no problem saying no) i am not comfortable doing the group shots so they went and hire the cheapest guy in the county.

I've already got 6G of cards on its way at the moment, 4 spare 2700mah rechargeables for the flash, 2 x Li-ion rechargeables for the 30D. Like you, i had 4G before (1 x 2G, 2 x 1G). But a 4G card and a 2G card on the way means I can shoot RAW + Jpeg all day. And enough power to last the day.

Last thing you want is run out of room or power in the middle of the day. Oh, bring a spare camera, be it film or P&S.

The Jobo is on my christmas wish list

Take it off again, it's pretty rubbish as back up hard drives go. Try and find something that at least tells you what files it's got on it's drive. If you want to know what else is wrong with it, just ask. :)

Is it that bad??

Well to go off topic for mo, yes it is.

When I took mine out of the box it was fine as a card reader but no hard drive showing at all. I called the shop and they said, "this happens all the time, send it back and we'll reconnect it". So obviously I opened it up to see what was going on. The dirve is held in only by the connector pins and lives in a case that lets it move around. So it only takes a little nudge for the drive to fall off the pins. Mine now has the chopped off end of a chop stick stuffed in the case as a filler.

It gets worse still, it will quite often refuse to upload from a card once it's got about 15gig on it. It seems that sometimes it doesn't always cap an upload properly. All the files will be ok, it just wont start a new folder and so wont take another upload.

Then there is the fact that it does take a while to drain a 2gig card and shows percentage transfered as it's going. All fine but once it gets to 100%, it shows this for about 20 seconds and then turns off. There is now no way you can know for sure if it finished the transfer unless you saw it get to 100% or plug it in to a puter. Makes re-using the card a bit nervy if you have shot anything important.

Oh and the battery liffe is a bit poor too. Quite a handy USB drive though. :)
