Have just been sent this update from Adobe. Now it won't recognise RAWs! Help!!!

Can't help with specifics, but get in touch with Adobe. Part of the cost of the program goes towards support. Or at least it should be. And if no one tells them there is a problem, then they will be unaware that they have to fix something.

No one at Adobe, apparently. They say call back later when they 'may' haver someone who knows what the error code means...

Which version of ACR have you got - is it 8.5.0.236?

What error message do you get when opening a CR2 file?

Ah, you're on a Mac - I thought you were on a PC (8.5.0.236 is the latest for PC).

8.5.42 is a release candidate - it obviously hasn't installed properly. I'd try uninstalling it then reinstalling a fresh download of it - if that doesn't work, perhaps reinstalling the last final version might solve the problem.

There's a breakdown of error code U44M2P7 here.

Nope, I'm on PC. Isn't 8.5.0.236 the DNG converter?

As far as I know ACR and DNG Converter are in the same package.

If you've got 8.5.42 it sounds like you've installed a Mac update instead of the PC update.

Odd! I uploaded it from a prompt, so that's the one they've sent me.

Looks a bit different in format to the one they sent - downloading (at Somerset Rural speed; takes time  ) now. Ta for all this help, Ozei

I just tried it (i.e. a fresh download & install) and it seems to work fine - it'll open a NEF using right-click, open with Photoshop (I don't have a Canon RAW to test)..

It gives this box in Photoshop>Help>About Plug-in>Camera Raw

I automatically clicked on the updater, didn't check to see what it would do until later. What it's done is waste my whole day and put me behind on some pretty important editing. Still not working. I'll see if anyone at Adobe is around yet.

You probably needed to uninstall 8.5.42 first - although (if I'm right and it's for Mac) it might not be possible without uninstalling Photoshop as well.

Adobe updates can cause real problems - I always make an image of C: drive before using any of them. It only takes 5 minutes to make a 'before' image using Acronis or Macrium and another 5 to restore to it. Reinstalling Photoshop and all of the plugins can take hours.

Looks like the features above (post 14) only apply to CC and not CS6.

I think any update to the Camera Raw in CS6 will only be new camera compatibility updates, the Camera Raw in CC will get new camera compatibility updates and new features. They say they will carry on supporting the new RAW formats for ACR in CS6. Hopefully they stick to that.

LR5 'should' get new camera compatibility updates and any new features if it hasn't already.

Right, well, after a few fruitless hours being passed from pillar to post, they suggested I un-and-re install. This took a couple more hours. And didn't work. So they sent me a new copy of CS6. Only they didn't. It was a trial version of CC. The second copy was downloaded by just 9.30 (11 hours after I first contacted Adobe about the problem). It worked, and now keeps nudging me to update to RAW 8.5. I think that on reflection I probably won't.

No idea what caused this, but thanks for all the suggestions.

It must have worked because the ACR that's built into CC has overwritten the duff ACR (the Mac one) - that's what I was hoping the 8.5.0.236 download would do.

If you want to update to 8.5, you could always make an image of C: drive first (i.e. before attempting any CC/ACR update). You could use Macrium Reflect Free Edition - http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx. (NB. the free version needs a CD/DVD for restoring to an image - the non-free versions don't).

Yeah, cheers, Ozei, but from what I've read there is nothing apart from some new profiles that would affect CS6, and apart from a rather nifty perspective tool I've seen nothing in CC to make me want to change. My cameras still have a couple of years in them (fingers crossed...) before I need new ones.

CC launches slightly faster than CS6, plus it can access Camera Raw direct from the filter list (CS6 can't do this) and as you say it has Perspective Warp (quite useful). Other than that, there's not much advantage over CS6.

If I didn't already have CS6 I could see the attraction of only having to pay £9 per month to get the best stuff on the market rather than having to shell out £800 or however much it is now, and I guess I'll have to go for it next time I need to upgrade, but until then...
