Hey guys new here just starting my adventure into DSLR's

With my Bday and xmas only two days apart Im lucky enough to get a fair wedge of cash to play around with to purchase my First DSLR

Ive decided on the 500D and was tempted to walk in Jessops and pay full whack until alittle research through up

http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/

they seem well trusted on Talkphotography and currently have a 500D in stock but just the body only

if i was to purchase the body only can somebody recommend me a decent lens, as I hear varying views on the 'Kit" lens which is usually supplied with the brand new camera.

So if do go down the second hand route id like to get something better from the off, even tho i really wont be able to use it to its maximum potential just yet

Im after something that can cover a broad spectrum of shooting (with Cars taking up most of this) but that is regarded better than the Standard 18-55 is lens?

cheers neil

Hello there and welcome Neil

An idea of available budget for the lens would be handy, so many choices

Cheers
Rich

I bought a 500D about 12months ago with the kit lens. I don't think there is anything to worry about with the kit lens which is quite capable of taking sharp well exposed pictures.

If this is your first dslr then buy it with the kit lens. You will be able to learn all you need to know with this setup and look to buying other lenses etc at a future date.

Hope this is of some use.

Welcome.

The Kit lens is pretty good and a good starting point. You can pick them up used and new quite easily but it's cheaper to buy the body and lens kit.

I have just bought a 500D body only and a 50mm f1.8 prime lens which will do me for now until I have saved enough for the Canon 24-70mm f2.8L or 24-105mm f4L...YUM!

well i was looking at around the £550 mark but hoping to get some essentials aswel

main list im after

500D + lens of some sort
Bag
Tripod
Extra Memory

going second hand obviously allows me to achieve this alot easier

hi withoutabix, i've recently got myself a 500d, a great camera.

i bought the body on its own and opted for the tamron 18-200 lens, and i think its a pretty good 'all round' lens to get you going.

i'm using it for just that really, and i'll be getting other more specific lenses as i go along.

the only thing its not great at is autofocusing in low light conditions, but i just flick it to manual for these situations.

i went new but if you go second hand you should be able to get the same combo in your budget.

i'm more than happy with it

thanks guys food for thought definalty seems like the kit lens will be a good start!

cheers for the link dude think i may see if Jessops will price match as if im buying new i'd rather do it in person

Hey, I know i'm new here but I have a 500D for sale. It's about 8 months old and in got condition. I also have the 18-55mm kit lens and a canon 75-300mm (the older version). It's a great cera and has served me well but I think it's time to upgrade. I'm asking for £450, but I'm open to offers. :)
