Yes
I know it wasnt a solid quote, more an estimat but I was told around £100 for the glass and another £100 to fit +VAT.

Im thinking of about £250 after postage and what not. This was from Fixation, in London.

Today I got an estimate by post from another company...........check this out:

Hi

We haven’t had to replace this item before, but you’re probably looking in the region of £199 + parts + VAT. Parts could cost around £200/300.

If you can leave it with us for a couple of days we can give you a definite price.

Sendean Cameras
Shop number 2
9-12 St Annes Court
London W1F 0BB

We are talking around £500 or so here. how can they justify double the price!!!

the pro's use fixation :)

if they have said it'll cost that much i'd let them have the body and give an accurate estimate and not worry about the little shops :)

I love the sensors2go site

i wouldnt let them touch it if they havent changed one before, they'll b****r it up completely, charge you £500 to do it and leave you with a ****ed camera, id do as digitalfailure said and send it to someone whos done it before

doesn't inspire much confidence with this company even if they charged the same price as fixation. I would go to fixation as they have a good reputation and are canon authorised aswell.

Just seen your website about the sensor - very funny lol :)

With a new 400d available for £388 I wouldn't even consider spending that much on a repair.
Cut you losses, bin the body & go for a new one.
Good luck with whatever you decide.

Gareth.

PS you could always grasp the nettle & come on over to the Dark Side

The thing is Fixation are a Canon approved repairer. As far as I am aware there are only 2 in our area, Fixation and Colchester and I know you have already had a quote from them...Ian

Use Fixation. I've used them twice and they've been great.

I think no matter who you use they will send it back to canon to repair.

If you've spoken to

Canon
Colchester Camera
Fixation

that only leaves

Canon are running well behind at the moment A mate sent his 1Dsmk2 in for a new shutter using Canon CPS and hes been without it 3 weeks so far.

Saying that, pete sent his to Fixation for a new shutter and it was way for only 2 weeks, over easter too.

The strange part is...I rung Canon at Elstree and she said we dont do repairs here...i will email you the places that do them.

She then emailed me a list of repair centres, of which the first one was Canon at Elstree!

At £250 you really have to think is it worth it?

If you are technically minded and don't mind getting stuck in with a screw driver you could possibly change the glass yourself. There are walkthroughs for replacing the glass for IR use the method would be identical.

/edit jings learn to spell man!

Thanks steep, I have thrown that into my melting pot of "things to decide about the sensor glass"!

and you think the replacement glass for normal use (non-IR) would be available to buy for the public without Canon doing it themselves?

No! Ive posted the sensor picture but not images covered in the scratches. ..... and I dont really want to! :(

colchester are not too bad, replaced the mirror mechanism on mine in a couple of weeks, for £150

This may not be helpful Janice! Didn't you "trip over" dog /kerb whatever etc.
I know perish the thought.Sorry.

No! not insured on separate insurance, cant afford it. not insured on house either apparently. Will insure from now on though!

If i did trip over, then whatever gets broken will be repaired and Id still have a scratched sensor glass, that would be MY luck!!

i dont think anyone should be encouraging deliberately defrauding the insurance now, should they?

What you need is a dealer who’s confident he can fit the glass, then to reasonably price and trade in your camera. .. for a newer model?

What I need is a fair crack of life's whip. I got £100 from the ATM today...head full of sensor problems and other c**p.... money was for some food and deisel for my husband to work.

Walked away for 2 mins and realized I hadnt picked up the cash. Card was back in purse and I dont even remember doing it.

Ran back, no cash in machine. had to take another £100 out for the food, bank said machines take the cash back in if its not removed in a certain time.

Not my luck. statement says two lots of £100 withdrawn, but nothing put back. :(

Just waiting for my husband to come home to tell him Ive co**ed up, again.. :'(

If you live in Essex and your neighbours are having an unplanned BBQ this afternoon....... ;)

Bl**dy hell Janice its not your week is it ?:'(
Chin up, girl, things can only get better from here

Seems like you having a bad streak - sorry to hear that you lost £100. Hopefully soon the good steak will be back

Holy cow Janice...you need to get that camera sorted at whatever the cost I feel, your sanity depends on it...

If your hubby loves you as much as we do, :naughty: I'm sure he'll break if you submit to your emotions when he gets home... admit defeat, plead insanity and express your close to breakdown without the camera.

Hey its the truth. :D

Fingers crossed it goes that way.

Unfortunately, he doesnt. cant tell him about the sensor... will have to get it sorted without him knowing. hard to explain...but thats how it goes.

right ive had a nice big bottle of cider...to face the onslaught when he finds out I left £100 for someone to take home and enjoy their sunday.

You and doug are having enough bad luck for all of us.

For our sakes don't book a holiday to Turkey:shrug: and i'm now going to tell doug not to clean his sensor.

LOL!!!:D

Janice, if you didnt take the money out of the machine, after a certain amount of time, the machine takes it back again.

It then goes into a special 'pot' inside the machine to be checked by staff (tomorrow). If no one was nearby to take it after you walked away, chances are it's been sucked back into the machine, and will be re-credited to your account tomorrow/within a few days.

It wasnt at a bank marcel...but outside a tesco garage...would the same thing happen... who would check that...surely not the tesco people?

I have no idea if there was anyone near, Marcel....I dont even remember putting my card back in my purse but it's back.

I cant remember anything really. I went to sainsburys after but I cant remember walking round there now.

ive transfered £100 out of my own small account and put it back into our joint one, but he will still see that and have a go at me for being so stupid....and arent I just though.

Oh well, lets just hope it goes back onto the account but I doubt it.

i wonder how much time it gives you, enough for you to put a card in a wallet....what do you reckon, 20 seconds??? more????

It should do the same actually, regardless of where the machine is. Theyre all owned by banks anyway (Except for those 'pub' type ones that charge you).

Tesco staff wont have access to it, the bank will come and fill it / empty the 'pot' every so often (I have no idea when though, it's best to give your bank a ring).
I don't think it's that long either. 30 seconds or so sounds about right.

Janice, the money if not taken would have gone into a 'bin' in the atm along with damaged notes etc. and the next time the machine was filled it would have been collected and sent back to the replenishing company. The money that comes out of these machines is very accurately counted and discrepancies would show up. Go to your bank and tell them you think that's what happened. They will check into it for you though it may take a while. Tesco ATMs are actually run by RBS.

Oh yes, if you don't take your money or your card, the machine will beep insistantly at you for a while before taking it back in.

ive rung the bank and she has started an investigation......could take 6 weeks she said. :nono:

Sounds about right, quite a lot has to happen meantime and even though it may be a lot of cash to you it's small taters to them so they're not going to rush.

Yeah i appreciate that.

I dont recall hearing a bleeping....but i dont recal pulling the card either! :bang:

ah well,,,, thanks for your help. I will let you know the outcome.

Janice - I had this happen to me once, but this time the money didn't get pushed out far enough for me to get my fingers on it. It was at a Tesco ATM, and it does get sucked in within about 15-20seconds. It then took them about 2 weeks to put it back on my account.

Must admit I rang them after every 2 - 3 days to make sure they hadn't forgotten me

Good luck lass
