Covering an event yesterday for the city, great. I thought everything was going to run nice and smoothly as there was an area where the public were not permitted. So set myself up and prepared for the photograph. The next thing I know I was surrounded by people with point and shoots (who had dove under the tape). I got up and took little notice when suddenly I felt a push from behind. Not a gentle accidental push, a shove. It caught me off guard and found myself on the ground, grazed palms, knocked forehead, broken lens and in a frightfully ****ed off mood. The organizers were stunned. Getting up I looked round to find some guy with his little consumer dSLR (using live view, that really took the biscuit) laughing. Broken equipment in hand I approached him holding back my anger because I could have killed the guy and requested payment for the lens. The fool ran off later to be found by the police. Charges have been laid, suing the prick and getting fully reimbursed for the lens.

I understand the pushing between press tog's trying to get a photograph, I enjoy it. Especially the banter. Being 6ft 1in and well built makes it fun. It is hardly ever taken out of hand. Yesterday really annoyed me. Cracking headache, a 24-70 down the drain until I get the money back, some really retarded e-mails, and a sick baby (continuous puking and projectile poop) .

Suppose the bright side of it is the delivery of a couple of media passes for an event in August. This time I will be armed with a cattle prod and if this happens again they are getting it right in the f'ing chin.

I'd see if you can book him for assault while you're at it, not likely to get it but worth a try

Say it could of damaged the inside your camera etc milk it so that prick gets whats coming to him.

Too bloomin right: sue the git for assault and criminal damage...what a retard!!!

As you say - a bit of 'elbows' in a press-scrum is all well and good, but actually clobbering someone?

I really enjoy the press-srums I haven't heard of that term before (I am in Canada though).

I've left the details of the case in the hands of my lawyer. She'll get the most out of it I'm sure (wife's bosses daughter) and we are good friends. Its just hard to believe that it happened.

Needless to say I didn't get the photographs and failed (for the first time) to deliver to a client. I think this is the main factor behind the annoyance. They understand though but unfortunately there are no images of the event for publication. Excluding the build up of course.

I'd add loss of earnings to the claim as well then!!

I wouldn't hold your breath for the money, 5 or so years ago my sister had her door mirror ripped off by some scumbag, he was caught on CCTV doing it, charged, found guilty and sentenced to community service and ordered to pay her the £150 it cost.

5 years on she's never received a penny, she's chased it a few times, the last response was, he's moved and we don't know where he is.:bat:

It's a clear cut case of Common Assault and Criminal Damage. However, you're much more likely to recover money through the civil courts than you are through the criminal court.

It still doesn't make up for the inconvenience caused by this idiot :(

Of course, I refunded the organizers as I didn't deliver. The bill is to be paid by Mr.Retard.

It's possible you have a claim against them as well, not providing a safe working environment etc. which means elf and safety might also be interested.

The problem with that is it might have a knock on effect with further contracts. I get regular business from the city so I don't want to put any kind of jinx on it. It has taken quite some time building the relationship which has paid off. Don't want to jeopardize it. You know how some people can be. :cuckoo: :D

I don't know what to say to that! What a complete idiot :bat:
Just glad to hear that you weren't too badly hurt and that they caught the imbecile and I really hope that it doesn't have a detrimental effect on your business.

Remember that the OP is from Canada.
I'm not trying to criticise your advice . . . I'm not sure how the Canadian court system works or how likely he is to be able to recover the costs. I do suspect that they may be a bit more efficient at this sort of thing than the UK though

I am indeed. From but not am :). This will be my first encounter with the justice system here (apart from meeting the coppers, who are very friendly). See how it turns out.

 That's not what you said earlier ;)

I wish you all the best of luck with it . . . and sincerely hope that my (and everyone else's) cynicism is proved wrong.
Let us know how you get on.

Very true . For the record I'm from the emerald isle (Rep. of Ireland). Moved to Canada a few years ago. Lived in the UK for a while, Wales, Scotland and Belgium for that matter. Been around.

I'll update when the results come in :-)
