Ranking a website in a particular county

I'm trying to rank a website in a specific country - Its in that native language and SEO is optimized etc -but not seeming to get anywhere. Anyone that knows what they're talking about, do you have any advice? Much appreciated!

Alexa ranking is quite handy although can be a bit depressing for non popular sites

my own site is only 870,078th globally and 24,622th in the uk - anything not in the top 100,000 globally probably has very few visitors

The location/IP address of the server comes into it, not just a bit of SEO and language. I have been told that buying a .au domain name and hosting it in the UK won't help, it needs an Australian IP address (or something - I'm researching this at the moment)

If you have a generic TLD register a Google Search Console account, add your website and specify your target country.

I'm confused! The title says county, so that's what I read in the first post.

No one has mentioned Google Search Console yet. Have you added you site to this?
There you can specify crawl rates, target country, submit site maps, see how much of the site has been indexed, indexing errors etc.
