Can you get one without a camera ?

I have a few viewfinder cameras that you set the distance to get your focus. Obviously, without measuring every shot, you have to guess.

I wondered if you could get a range finder as a separate unit ? if so, what is its correct name, so I can have a search for one.

Thanks

Rich

Yes

I just searched for rangefinder and waded past the cameras and golf spotting scopes.

Plenty on Ebay
The voigtlander ones are by far the best quality but fetch the higher prices.
They come in feet or metres.

Thanks :-)

Simple as that then !

I am curious now to get one and see how it works

just a thought ... when you look at the exif / metadata on a digital shot, you get the focal distance.

Is there any way of using a dslr as a range finder ?

sone lenses show the focal length, some dont. Is that info enough

I had one for shooting (rifles) and it was a Bushnell laser range finder, I paid £180 for it about 8 years ago. It fires a laser to the point of aim, and measures the time for the laser to return. No need for it to be fitted to anything, they are hand held.
LASER RANGE FINDER

Less than a tenner on fleabay..

And thanks to Groucho I have the instructions to adjust it.

There's huge variety of range finders available to suit vintage cameras, from £5 to £100.

If you're using modern films in vintage cameras the extra speed of modern films is going to put you up at f/11-16 most days and struggling to open up the aperture much more than this within the limitations of the available shutter speeds. So you get enough depth of field that being precise on distance isn't critical.

unless you use an ND filter to 'slow' the film down :)
