ok I can buy a usb thing that turns one usb into 4 etc....

Nope. The signal speeds used are far too high to mux RAM or have reliable accesses unless you design it onboard.

If your mobo is full and at its maximum memory capacity, it's new PC time (or at least a newer mobo)....
 
If it's a laptop you can use Readyboost, although hard to tell any difference on my netbook.
That's because USB/SD card access is pretty slow and only helps in some very limited circumstances. Onboard memory is probably 1000x as fast as writing to/from flash based storgae over an SD or USB interface. You would do much better by simply adding an SSD (yes, I know netbooks are pretty limited in what you can change)...
 
its not a problem and with this version of windows 7 i can only carry 8 Gb....

Have 6 but also have an old base unit with 2 x 1Gb sticks.. opened up the new (15 month old) unit today hoping to see 4 ports for RAM, alas, only 2, and not worth buying 2 x 4 gb sticks for what i do... hence wondered if you could expand the slots as per USB's...
