I had a great day today. It was exceptionally busy - last time I was there in 2007 it was relatively quiet. of course different stage and part of Wales - but generally the area was much quieter.
We planned to do Dyfi and then the spectator stage at Chirk. Despite getting within 6 miles of chirk at half 1 we just got stuck in a long queue. I've just been forwarded an e-mail from the press office that is titled "unprecedented demand" and that they had to turn ticket holders away from the stage. Not ideal but very healthy and an encouraging sign for the future of the event.
At Dyfi we walked the stage a for about 2 miles or so to find a good spot, it was (iirc) between junction 4 and 5. We were 2 corners from 2 very big accidents. The corner where these occurred was a long right tightens at a junction, after a 300m (aprox) downhill straight.
Robert Kubica (of F1 fame) was running first on the road, we heard the whistles, heard the engine then a flash of car and a series of bangs (obviously I was down the lens awaiting the car to come into view). He went off at the junction (very fast) and ended about 50m below in the trees. Apparently it was a wrong pacenote call.
Later, one of the WRC2/3 cars (yet to find out who) appeared to do the same thing but went straight down the junction and hit a tree very hard. There were a lot of marshals at the corner by this point and a TV crew walking down the stage towards the corner. It could have been a lot worse (although difficult to judge from our distance).
Talking of which, the amount of Polish fans was staggering, and I'm sad to say that they were taking liberties both with there own health and that of the drivers/stage. Standing in inappropriate positions - i.e just prior to corner apexes outside of flat long right handers with sheer drops at the edge of the road, waiting and taking photos of each other and friends on the stage when it was live in between cars), generally lacking awareness of their surroundings and loitering on the stage.
Generally walking a live stage you never stay in the same position, always plan your next move, know where your heading, be aware and stop somewhere well before you hear the whistles, also walking in the direction of traffic is a good idea - non of this was on display and I'd hate it to reflect badly on the generally well behaved British fans.
quite happy with my pictures, we found a good spot - as ever on inspection at home i think "should have done this, should have done that etc" and having seen that fantastic thread in the criteque section they makes mine look rather bad...!
