Rally GB

I'm hopefully going, don't know what the crack is though as I haven't been near a WRC event since 1997!

I'm going.
It's a difficult event for a first timer (all the signange will send you to spectator pens, most of them have dreadful angles for photo's, they're designed for spectating;

Personally I'd recommend Thursday or Friday, You'll get several goes at the cars during shakedown / practice / qualifying, and the marshalling isn't as strict as it is out on the stages. Then you could head into Llandudno and have an afternoon shooting the fun on the street, go to the ceremonial start (in front of the castle, but I've no idea how suitable it is for shooting) or head into the forest for some evening spectating (difficult to shoot though - pitch black).

Friday in Sweetlamb is excellent spectating, and if you get a spot early enough, good for photo's too (jumps and watersplashes) . Avoid the 'Rallyfest' stages on Saturday and Sunday. In fact Sunday is a nightmare from most perspectives (the only stage run twice is the rallyfest stage and it's built round a massive spectator pen).

I'll be at Shakedown and probably at Sweetlamb too, if you want to meet for a chat.

Just sunday for me now :(
Sunday ooh!
Are you planning 2 stages? The family friendly one looks awful for photo's but will probably be a great days entertainment with kids (only stage run twice).

I'm heading down to a friends house on Friday, who lives a mile from the stage in the Dyfnant Forrest

Going to be there Saturday and Sunday

My first time too, so fingers crossed i will end up with a good shot or two

Yup, well tring to... I want to avoid the orm and get some of the finish if possable

I'm thinking Sweetlamb/The other one as they're 100 miles round trip closer to me. Could meet up yeah.

I'll PM my phone number, we'll be there early and probably walk up the hill for the clear jump on the 1st run through. Might move down to the 1st watersplash for the 2nd run (it's odd, you have to be at the side of the fence really early before the 1st run, but then everyone usually goes for lunch and you have nowhere near the wait there for the 2nd run).
1st run (not got many rally pics on the web)

2nd run

edit... I'll post pics later.

My first time rallying too!

I arrive late Friday so just there for the weekend sessions.

I'm planning to head to Gartheiniog on Saturday morning - do you know if you can walk from Gartheiniog to Dyfi? The website says 'Plase do not attempt to move between the Dyfi and Gartheiniog Stages in the interval between runs' but I assume this means by car.

Sunday I might just head straight up to Great Orme which has been recommended to me. Is it realistic to think I could get to the Dyfnant 2 stage in the morning then make my way up to Great Orme or would I be better just heading straight up towards Llandudno?

thanks in advance!

Looking at it, not sure if I've got this wrong, but I can only get a single stage ticket for Myherin or Hafren, not Sweet Lamb, and others have said Myherin is good, so will probably go there.

Then I'm thinking of sleeping in the car over night and doing Gartheiniog or Dyfi the next day. Ends up costing me about £20 more, but makes the trip a lot better value.

living only 3 miles from the huge H.Q site in deeside ,i think it might well be worth popping along there for some shots of the stalls ,attractions whatever is on offer .it looks really good and i have watched it being put up over the last couple of weeks .as i go birding round there daily .
one think i will mention is the fact its suddenly turned bitterly cold up here today so if your coming from doon sarf wrap up warm lads ,it was only 9 deg at 4p.m this afternoon

I still cringe when people call "the RAC" rally GB!

I've never been to these 2 but I doubt you can walk between them - they are run fairly sequentially so if you did you would have to take in the first at Garth and the second at Dyfi. Also remember you are in the welsh forests so unless you have a compus, good OS map and are experienced walker then you will struggle.

I've only been once since the heady days of Mcrae and Burns and that was in 2007. They do pen you in these days (back in the day if you were experienced and knew what you were doing you could walk the stages with the cars). However depending on what you want to shoot there are a few angles, we found a good spot (my post processing skills have improved a little since)

We are planning for an early start from brum on saturday morning. We will head (probably) to dyfi as the description of the spectating area sounds ok and it is in a very good part of wales. We will then attempt to get to the Chirck castle for the 2 stages round the castle. Not sure how great that will be for photography but it will be nice to take in spectator stage something that disapeared from the RAC a long time ago. I doub't you can get too close though :(

This year marks the 10th anniversary of what was the end of Colin Mcrae's WRC career (apart from the 2005 unexpected swansong) and the event on which Burnsie suffered that blackout when at the wheel on the recce. where does time go eh?

Went today was good, until I got caught on the course as it went live, queue lots of scrambling up a bank and missing some awesome photo oppurtunities.

Myherin isn't very quick though?

I had a great day today. It was exceptionally busy - last time I was there in 2007 it was relatively quiet. of course different stage and part of Wales - but generally the area was much quieter.

We planned to do Dyfi and then the spectator stage at Chirk. Despite getting within 6 miles of chirk at half 1 we just got stuck in a long queue. I've just been forwarded an e-mail from the press office that is titled "unprecedented demand" and that they had to turn ticket holders away from the stage. Not ideal but very healthy and an encouraging sign for the future of the event.

At Dyfi we walked the stage a for about 2 miles or so to find a good spot, it was (iirc) between junction 4 and 5. We were 2 corners from 2 very big accidents. The corner where these occurred was a long right tightens at a junction, after a 300m (aprox) downhill straight.

Robert Kubica (of F1 fame) was running first on the road, we heard the whistles, heard the engine then a flash of car and a series of bangs (obviously I was down the lens awaiting the car to come into view). He went off at the junction (very fast) and ended about 50m below in the trees. Apparently it was a wrong pacenote call.

Later, one of the WRC2/3 cars (yet to find out who) appeared to do the same thing but went straight down the junction and hit a tree very hard. There were a lot of marshals at the corner by this point and a TV crew walking down the stage towards the corner. It could have been a lot worse (although difficult to judge from our distance).

Talking of which, the amount of Polish fans was staggering, and I'm sad to say that they were taking liberties both with there own health and that of the drivers/stage. Standing in inappropriate positions - i.e just prior to corner apexes outside of flat long right handers with sheer drops at the edge of the road, waiting and taking photos of each other and friends on the stage when it was live in between cars), generally lacking awareness of their surroundings and loitering on the stage.

Generally walking a live stage you never stay in the same position, always plan your next move, know where your heading, be aware and stop somewhere well before you hear the whistles, also walking in the direction of traffic is a good idea - non of this was on display and I'd hate it to reflect badly on the generally well behaved British fans.

quite happy with my pictures, we found a good spot - as ever on inspection at home i think "should have done this, should have done that etc" and having seen that fantastic thread in the criteque section they makes mine look rather bad...!
