Anyone done this sort of thing ?

My daughter is a member of the University of Bath Judo club and is trying to get some sponsors to contribute towards running costs and also, in some small part so they can afford a camera to take some pictures, or even better in my opinion, to get someone to take some for them.
They are one of the most successful university clubs in the country and compete not only in the south west but further afield, with some members having taken part on the European University Sports Association Games, so there could be potential for reasonably wide exposure for a sponsor.
As a starter, does anyone have any idea who to talk to or contact about this ?
Obviously, if there were any photographers in or near Bath who might be interested in helping out it would be great to hear from you...

Any advice or ideas would be much appreciated - thanks !

So are you asking how to go about getting sponsors ?

I do this quite a lot for local football clubs, as it’s bath uni, you have a massive step up the ladder as it’s very well known, and respected for the athletes it produces, I find you have 3-4 choices (well loads really, but these have worked the best for me)

1. Emails
2. Local Facebook groups (something like bath and surrounding news page or something)
3. Try to get a local paper to do a photo and short peice (needs to be a local story, but they are sometimes willing to help)

4. And what I find works the best, old fashioned leg work, pop in, Knock on doors, face to face and ask, you’ll be surprised how many local businesses will help, (and they may get a tax break on it) getting a decent online following will help your sale, but not needed. Just be friendly, polite, to the point have a few prices available for all bank account sizes, and how will it benefit them. To give you an idea, we got a local Indian restaurant to buy a kit, they got a name on it, we organised a few team nights out in there. You could do a patch on team uniforms, t-shirts ect, maybe small banners that they stand behind for photos before events, you can look at a single event sponsorship, individual personal sponsorship.
Don’t try to be a salesman, tell the truth, I seem to get 1 in 10/15, not great odds, but it all mounts up.

Oh and make sure you have receipts and everything to hand, you can easily get a ‘yeah sure’ and a ‘no’ a day later when you return.

If you want me to explain the others, or help to go about it (1-3) feel free to ask

Superb - thank you so much for this - I'll pass it on to her, and no doubt she'll be so grateful too.

A firm I know is going to stop doing Christmas gifts for customers and doing a donation to charity instead. I suggested sponsoring a local rugby team or something because I'm always a little suspicious of charities. You could try this angle when approaching businesses who do annual gifts as it would allow them to reduce their spend whilst also looking good to their customers as they are supporting a good cause.

And thanks to you too Graham - passed on to her, and I think she has already been on the phone !
