hey guys,

was wondering what you use to protect your camera from the rain??

Was looking on amazon tonight and not really seen anything i like lol

I was hoping a poncho style one with a built in bit for you to stick your lens through

anyone have any ideas??

perfect thanks Hoppy, i looked on WHE but i couldnt find anything lol

If you ever have the ching, a lot of Canon's L lenses are weatherproofed and I think the 1D and 7D is.

There's videos on YouTube of folks putting pro bodies in the shower to clean them

Indeed they are. One of the reasons I went for the 7D.
But, if you want a really cheap way of protecting your camera then I suggest plastic sandwich bags (yes, i know )
I used to use it with my 400D + 70-200 combo with a hole cut in the bag which the lens poked through. Kept the camera nice and dry, and probably best of all...working.

Tesco do a very nice line in camera waterproof covers, they give them away free with groceries ;)

The sleeve or leg from an old waterproof, If you are out walking, a gaiter, or as already mentioned, and what I use, large sanwich bag a a couple of lacky bands!

Think Tank Hydrophobia 70-200 flash..

Absolutely awesome long term protection, very well designed but pricey at about £110.

The 7D is less weather sealed than the later 1D bodies - what that actually means in practice is less clear...

I bought a Stormjacket for when I went to the Far East a couple of years ago. No they're not cheap, but do the job admirably, and after all, the kit it's trying to protect hardly cost pennies. I know that a Tesco bag would most certainly be cheaper, but I struggle to believe that it would be as effective.

I wil have to try the plastic bag trick

I'm on the look out for a cheap green or camouflage kagool with elasticated sleeves on ebay, would make a couple of covers :D

I bought a pair of camoflage waterproof over trousers off eBay, 99p. The legs have a tie cord which I removed after cutting the leg off to a generous length. Replaced the cord with elastic, tight enough to grip the lens hood. Not only is it camoflagued, the extra length covers the camera when its raining.

Cameramac. Keeps camera totally dry.

There is also someone on here who makes them to order, blowed if I remember who they are. I bought two and will be using them this weekend

Oh and remember to put a micro fibre cloth in your bag as well.

Chris

Hi,

It's not the camera getting wet that is always the problem. You need to keep water off the lens!

I use a Lee filter wide angle hood with a mac over the lot. If you handle the kit properly which for me will be on a tripod you keep the lens dry.

Regards

Chris

Carrier bag + elastic band: Tesco, Sainsburys or Asda (if I'm feeling chavvy)

It does make a difference: E-3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A15MgHHS_M8&NR=1

A friend of mine was shooting surfers on the beach. The camera got engulfed by a wave. He then went to the toilet block on the promenade and rinsed the camera under the tap...

Hi,

See picture of my Camo Mac:

As mentioned I bought two of these of Ruth, Wife of Brian Wardell on this forum. Unfortunately I cannot remember his handle. If anyone wants their email send me a pm.

I paid £33 for both, delivered and made to my specs. May have gone up since then, but still very low cost for a simple buy very effective product.

Chris

I use a pair of ex army camo waterproof trousers but not cut up, the lens (300mm f2.8) goes down one leg and the monopod up the other with the arse section covering the camera:thumbs:

I also keep a couple of the Optech rain sleeves handy as they are great for shorter lenses.

Cheers

Hi Scott,

I tend to find that drops of rain on the lens cause the picture to become blurred and ruined!!!

However, if that is the effect you are looking for then no problems of course.

Best regards

Chris

I always carry a couple of shower caps in my camera bag. These are the clear plastic ones with elastic and are often found in hotel bathrooms. Very handy to fit over the camera in a rain shower, or stick one over the lens to keep spray off between shots when you’re in a boat or on the seashore.

And you can also stick one on your head if you want to look really professional!
