im sure there is no issue but im off to pick the wife up tonight from a local station and i have walked to the over end of the platform before now with no issues took a few snap's on mobile and never got approcaed but this time while im waiting was going to nip with my camera and tri pod

so should i be ok or will i be expecting some one to say something not that im bothered by it a rule is a rule
 
just found my answer google is my frined ( should of done it before ) and to top it off thought this was a nice thing that they want you to observe too while there rather then say no we dont want you here

In an emergency, dial 999. Your presence at the station can be very helpful to us as extra "eyes and ears" and can be a positive security benefit
 
Thats given me a great idea for a long exposure. Got a great station near me lots of old victorian iron work.

yup. virgin allow it for personal use but no tripods.

London terminals are a pain in the rear, even (.especially!) for news snappers.

For commercial use, it gets trickier...

i would of never of gone there but sister in law move to sheffield went a few months back saw a amazing sunset camera and tri pod at home was gutted but now i can go back and have a good go long exposure too ;)

where im going it is about every twnety mins jsut small 2 carriage train unless a london express pop's up

i will stand at end of platform so there is no issue with the tri pod as it is a good walk from where the commuters stand
 
It must depend on the station as in this quieter part of Scotland there were people even standing off the platform in front of this train trying to get better angles and nobody said a word to them. It was after all the real Hogwarts Express:D

id be inclined to contact the station to find out their policy, would save you getting unceremoniously booted out of the station..

im assuming youre a first hull station, cant find anything specific on their site.

Surprised about London stations, I often see 3 or 4 people set up with tripods on the approach to London Victoria. I suppose as long as you are out of the way and ask permission, you should be ok. Might help to wear a bobble hat too!

Peter10d you need to swot up on your Ian Allen loco books, the Hogwarts Express was a GWR Hall class loco yours is a LNER K1 class. Now where did I put my bobble hat :D
 
Best to ask first by email so you have something to print off if they say you are allowed, then you cover all bases. Theres no notices at all in Hull paragon station so I've never attempted to take my camera in there and get some shots, even though I should really as its a nice place for architecture. Doncaster though has some signs saying that photography is prohibited and these continue throughout the adjacent frenchgate centre they have for buses also. I saw a photographer with a tripod in kings cross who had permission to be there (he took mine and my gf's photo after asking us to pose for him whilst we watched the large tv) but the security constantly kept approaching him to check his documentation lol. Guessing that if you walk in there with a camera and start snapping, they wouldn't be amused.
 
You should have no problem, personal photography is permitted (info from a BTP Constable)

You can take photographs at stations for personal use.

For any commercial photography, you must seek prior permission from the appropriate train operator or from Network Rail at their 17 major stations.

If you use a tripod, please ensure it doesn't obstruction other passengers, keep it away from platform edges and behind the yellow line.

You're not allowed to use flash photography on platforms as it is a potential safety hazard. We also ask that you do not take photographs of security related equipment such as CCTV cameras.

I don't know any further than that as being the official BTP guidance and what the BTP officers are taught to follow.

In fact, he said one of the biggest distractions on weekends is being asked to pose for tourist pictures, and that the majority of officers are happy to oblige.
 
I've been stopped at Birmingham New Street in the past, and have been challenged at Edinburgh Waverley when working for the press (nothing nasty just a photocall). I've even been 'arrested' by security at an airport.

In general whenever you're approaching something like a train station which is a public space but is privately managed you are best asking someone in charge, just to explain what you want to do. If you're reasonable you normally get a reasonable response. Whatever the official policy different stations will be more relaxed than others but the last thing you want to happen is for some tinpot dictator try to threaten you with the cops!

Depending on the station they might have different conventions, so I would try to find out a little beforehand or just ask someone politely when you get there.
 
Never had a problem and at my local stations when there is a steam train coming through you cant move for cameras and tripods
