Yes
it did it i brought a couple of copies but didnt think it would win!!!

normally Cowells puppets sell near a million, but Joe sold less than half a million. Epic Fail.

Well I haven't heard the RATM song and have absolutely no desire to. I agree that for once it would be nice to have something other than an X Factor winner no. 1 at Christmas but I do think they could have chosen something which had something to do with Christmas to get people to buy.

I think they've missed a trick to be honest. The Brett Domino Trio have a great new song this Christmas. When they appeared on Britain's Got Talent Simon Cowell was the only judge who didn't like them as he didn't "get" their act.

It would have been much more amusing to see them get to no. 1 than some foul mouthed trash.

So not so much being beaten by RATM, but being even more crap than usual. ;)

yup, pretty much, its a crap song. Why the hell do a Miley Cyrus cover??.

I bought RATM the first time round in the 90's..back when I had hair..long hair..

As I said in this thread

'tis a bit of a shock I must admit as this has been tried before
I don't like the song but at least it shot that smug git up the ass

It seems for the past few years xfactor has been planned to finish just in time for the xmas number 1,When I'd assume a huge amount of Cd's are brought so there's a lot of money to be made..I'm delighted that people decided to say no to some new kid on the block and instead get a No.1 hit from Somebody who's worked hard to be a good group.I highly doubt Joe was in pubs week trying to make a name for himself,If it wasn't for the Xfactor how many of us would of even heard of him?

i just dont think Joe was very good, he will make a good Jason or maybe show in Greece (like that other onem Ray Quinn...remember him?) maybe if Stacey had one, or even Olly, it may have been a different story..

I don't know the song, and I don't know Joe's either. I'm of the belief that a song should get to number one because it's a good song, and not because you like watching them compete on telly. I have a feeling that I would appreciate RATM's song more than Joe's.

I heard they use the same record label so only one winner

Here's a conversation from facebook:

at least there was actually some mystery to the christmas number one this year, if this hadn't happened it would have obviously been xfactor, and it is a decent song in my opinion!

It's not about x-factor it's about Simon cowell and ruining his Xmas yeh?!

it was all about giving people an option, I know I'm glad, I'm not overly fond of RATM but i'm sick of having this Cheesey xfactor song forced on me every year, the reason it won is because more people agree with me than like the xfactor song. I think this idea will catch on and mean from now on if the xfactor won't automatically win the Xmas number 1. next year Bon jovi living on a pray fir Xmas number 1 wootwoot

how about a good damn xmas song for xmas no.1?! lol i dont care if its not xfactor and in reality people would have option other than xfactor if anyone else released a half decent song that people bought volantarily rather than people needing to form a protest group for it to win...

lol, it's not about people releasing decent songs. It's about the financial, marketing and general absolute-giant backing that is the x factor.

well when ive argued that point with people they just say no its about getting a better song that the usual xfactor ballads to no.1...make up ** minds peopleee lol

that's the humor of it.
on the christmas charts compilation cds - killing in the name of. hilarious.
most of the people who watch x factor don't even buy, nor do they listen afterwards, to the music created by it. the singles released by the usually-washed-up-before-2-months-passes 'artists' are just excretion - a by-product of an all engulfing TV giant.

but the fact they get a number 1, every christmas, and it's fantastic publicity for all the celebs involved, means it's financially viable to continue. there is no art involved in hardly any of the chart toppers any more, it's all for their monetary value.
and THAT is the reason killing in the name of was made number 1.

lol that actually put a smile on my face! simply because you are the first person to give a genuine reason for why it is number one other than "x-factor is ****" "simon cowell can suck it"...but like u said no matter how much advertisment the xfactor people get from the show people dont buy their music afterwards unless they genuinely deserve to be stars for example leona lewis and will young although he was pop idol but same thing really

and that's my opinion on the matter :)

There are many reasons why the tracks you suggest, and indeed any 'nice' christmas track would simply not achieve the same result. The one that sticks in my mind is the one that strikes a chord with me.

There are a LOT of people who were around when Killing in the Name Of was first released - and a it has seen regular play time on rock radio and in rock clubs ever since. A number of years (7-9?) after it was released I used to play it when DJ-ing a rock venue - and people who were not even teenagers when it was released would fill the dancefloor. It coudl fill a near empty dancefloor - that is the mark of a well known track that ticks a lot of boxes. It is, to the right minds, an iconic track.

So straight away you have a track that to the right mindset has essentially timeless appeal. Last time I went to a rock club (much more recently) it was STILL getting played - and still the dancefloor was STILL full. So there are a lot of people who know the track. And like it.

These are the same people who rarely give a crap about the charts and loathe X factor and it's pansy manufactured drivel - many of these people are now late 20's & 30's and those same people have in the most case had, or still do have a bit of the rebel in them.

Give a rebel a cause? Even the rebel from 15 years ago will sit up and listen. And for a few pence and a couple of minutes of their time they can join the cause once more. Just a little bit.

It will likely never happen again, but IMO the way people actually came together and did this is pretty epic.

Totally. That's what made it so amazing. People are pretty sick of the charts. I for one can't remember the last time I bought a chart single or even paid any attention to the chart positions. But when you have the chance to buy a track like Killing in the Name then people are going to buy it, especially to get one over the X-Factor.

If people listen to the song then they should realise why this one was chosen over any other.

i couldnt understand why they picked that song for joe to sing, its a dreadful song and am i not right in thinking that its written about the struggle to get to the top in the record industry, something which neither joe (nor miley cyrus for that matter) have had to face being 2 bit celebrity talent competition regurgitations, so a pretty daft and awful choice for cowel which probably didnt help in this battle.

i didnt buy either single, because one is utter tripe (xfactor) and i already own the other track so see no point in buying it again. but fair play to those that did buy it for succeeding.
