The one with the photo reconnaisance guy.

When the jet screams past on the way to blowing up the rocket launcher, it's referred to as a Tornado.

It's going very quickly and it's difficult to be sure but it looks more like a Harrier to me.

Can anyone tell?

OK fine I'll be nice- I think I've seen that advert a few times and Im pretty sure it was a tornado.
 
The "insurgents "prepping the RPG also look very much like the group that had the bejaysus shot out of them by a helicopter in a much publicised you-tube video a couple of years ago with a commentary from one of the pilots describing how one of the wounded was still wrigling.
 
It's a Tonka, the clue was in the 'moving quickly' - Harrier isn't quick!

Dunno about that, but in this scene they they the crap blown out of them with what looks like a 2000lb LGB... for a soft target of 3 men in the open...

It is great to see your photo on your message.

I used to work at RAF Alconbury and had those [TR1's?] doing bumps all the time, It was great seeing the chase cars following them when they landed.
Someone left a tractor in gear there once and..............yes it trundled across the runway and hit one...........Oh the fan was never so covered!!!

Amateurs!

My Bty ( just before I arrived) threw 5 rounds FFE down range in the build up to GW pt1. Tgt? Humane killing of 2 camels in the danger area!

8x5x96 = 3,840lbs HE :D

500kg enhanced pave way? With the accuracy of around 9-10m that would be about right. Didn't look like their we're buildings around.
But it depends on weaponry available in the vicinity to take out the threat.

Looks a bit big for a 500lb'er

Anyway friend of mine once shot a camel with a bumblebee, thats probably about the same :D Toasty camel burger!

From Byker28i's post he mentions a 500kg class bomb. By my poor maths that equates to an 1100lb weapon. My two penneth is that the weapon falling off the GR4 is a Paveway III (the weapon in the video doesn't have the 'free gimablling' head of either EPWII or PavewayIV. The Paveway III is a 900kg (~2000lb) bomb.

Cheers, I'm a little rusty on my weapons. It's been a while since I worked on the tornados & harriers weaponry
It looked like a paveway 4, which is a common load in afghan theatre on the gr4. That has a 500kg bomb body

You drop what you have fitted, plus there's an accuracy issue. Yes you see these nice videos of the weapon dropping directly on target, but there's a degree of error. Not sure what it is on the newer weapons but it used to average out around 9m. The idea of warfare is to kill, these days without collateral damage. If the target is in an open area then it's an acceptable weapon release. I doubt they'd get clearance if it was in the middle of a town.

Nine miles is a bit wide, even for the RAF. That's Gunner territory! :D
 
Thats an interesting change in point of view, but I suppose that comes about from years of low intensity warfare - I'm more used to "proper" war where using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut is just a waste of resources because you then havent got a sledgehammer to break some concrete five minutes later.

I suppose the RAF isn't short of munitions, but on the other hand, think of the tax payers!
 
Most of the time the aircraft as used as a deterrent, flying over to scare people away as they know they can drop munitions.

Add to that, it's a low risk for the serving members of the forces. It's the political costs of the deaths not the physical costs that win/loses wars/conflicts these days. Yes you could send in ground troops, but they might not be able to react as quick, might walk into a gunfight etc. That's not to say they don't have their place, you'll always need boots on the ground.

An interesting development is the increased use of drones, and armed drones.
 
Oh I understand perfectly that this type of warfare is won or lost on popular opinion - ok so sapping your enemy's will to continue the fight is the aim of all warfare, but in wars against bandits it is more so.

Clearly robot warriors would allow some nations to wage endless war with no chance of loosing... that is quite scary when you think of it like that, because it is only the unacceptable human cost of the loss of soldiers that makes them hold back.
