The RAC are really trying my patience! 4 times I have rang requesting confirmation of cancellation of my renewal and on each occasion they have claimed it has been cancelled and to have sent an email confirming it has, I even requested confirmation via the "contact us" box only to get an auto response stating it will be replied to within 5 working days !!
The crafty gits must have had the auto renewal permission hidden somehow as I never ever knowingly agree to that, but I have contacted well before they are due to raid my bank as the cover expires on the 17th and first contacted them on the 31st of August cancelling. I simply do not trust them !

Now today instead of confirmation of cancellation I finally get this !!!!

Recently had similar when I switched my mobile phone contract from talk mobile to another company ,they simply can't seem to accept the fact I have closed my account ,despite them issuing a buk transfer number ,so I don't have to change my phone number over .
And if you wish to talk to a real person instead of a delayed Internet chat ,you guessed it it's a premium rate number .after 3 months peeing about I cancelled my direct debit

Leaving Talk Talk for BT was my worst nightmare cutting a long saga short it only ended after contacting an ombudsman when they threatened me with the bailiffs and I ended up with £100 compensation for all the grief and hassle.

Just hoping this is not the beginning of another saga, I should seriously consider recording any such calls in future as they do !
I read of a similar case with the RAC claiming not to have taken a call cancelling membership !.

Ha!

At least you had some documentation. The first I knew about my renewal was £139.83 on my credit card bill! B'stards!

After a phone call which also revealed that they have my address as one that was only ever given to Royal Mail to redirect my post for 18 months (complaint to RM pending...) I pointed out the same cover would have been £83 with the AA so they refunded me £55.99.

WTF! If they can do it for that price why charge me nearly £140?

No emails, no letter, just the charge to my credit card which I am sure I never authorized on an annual basis! :runaway:

which I am sure I never authorized on an annual basis!
I'm sure you did authorise it in the sense that the automatic renewal is hidden away in the small print. In my experience with RAC, insurance companies etc they always bump up the premium as a kind of reverse loyalty bonus (loyalty minus?) because I always get a better new quote online from my current providers than the one they have sent with the automatic renewal.

It well may be hidden away in the small print, however, it is very devious when one years premium is paid by credit card and an annual direct debit is set up with no mention of that in the point of sale phone call!

I would never have any payment set up in this way. Direct Debits I am more than happy with, but only from my bank account.

.....and I did not get any renewal paperwork at all, so had no idea of the massive increase until my credit card bill arrived a month later.....

Not convinced about "reverse loyalty bonus" either as it forces you to speak to them to get it adjusted, guaranteed to annoy me!

Just to be clear, this is not insurance, which is very variable, but breakdown cover which I have not used since 2013 and was not auto renewed on my credit card previously!

If it was a DD you'd be covered by the DD guarantee and they'd get a slap on the wrist.
They're just billing your card from file details, presumably hoping to grind down your will.

Moral of this story - if you have to call a second time because you didn't receive confirmation, make sure to follow up your call with a letter/email 'further to our telephone call of 9 Sept 2016'...
Then when you chargeback the card you can prove to your bank it is an unauthorised payment.
I'd also make a formal complaint if you have records of when you called - they get away with this nonsense because most people can't be bothered to kick up a fuss.

is it an unauthorised payment if you consented somewhere along the line?
If you've cancelled the renewal in line with your contractual agreement then it's unauthorised.

The RAC are really trying my patience!
Don't get me started on auto renewals, or "opt out" of payments, that really is a pet hate of mine!
I opted out of the work place pension scheme via their website, (I even received notification 2 days later, through the post)
the hour it was available, and yet they still took the first months payment from Augusts salary,
and yet it's not due to start until the 9th Sept. ( that being the cut off date to opt out)

RAC, sent me an auto renewal advice, nearly £200, for the full Monty.
I did a web search and found that other recovery services were offering the same deal at a fraction over £100.
I phoned them to cancel, and somehow they found room for a "loyalty bonus" taking the price to, yep you got it, a tad over £100

Leaving Talk Talk for BT was my worst nightmare
I hope they burn in hell!
I've been at them now for about a year, (Talk-talk)wondering why my internet speeds have been steadily dropping, the lowest recorded was 0.13Mbs (yep thats not a typo!)
The ombudsman is now involved, but TT claim there is nothing they can do, and that I should change providers,
They also claim that I closed the compliant, when in fact they were the ones that closed it, for the above reason.

im just thinking how you prove you've cancelled if you have nothing in writing?
You struggle. This is why you put it in writing! Always assume the worst ;)

And an e-mail is NOT putting it in writing! Use snail mail and recorded delivery as well as an e-mail and phone calls.

Even if you did unwittingly consent to the charge being taken from the card annually, unless they have specifically notified you of the renewal date and amount (thus giving you a chance to cancel, as is your right with such cover), that payment IS unauthorised.
I would definitely bring it up with your card issuer.
They are NOT allowed to renew without notice of renewal and cost.

I had it before where a mate paid my bike insurance on his credit card and I gave him cash! Following year they took the payment from his card again! We had fallen out mid term and not spoken for 6 months [emoji48]

Also the AA ! Upped my annual charge from £175 to £274 so I let it lapse and the bar stuards took it out of my account and put me in the red!
Without my knowledge!

I soon got it back

One of the things to watch with both breakdown and car insurance (maybe others) is that they give free "something" one year. And It is shown on your invoice as a payment and then credited back. Next year when they automatically renew it's rolled into the policy and you may not notice :-(

All of my AA membership is free. I get it when I get the car serviced. (y)

Maybe you're right but I don't see how that is free :-(

Green Flag advertising on tv. Tell us your renewal quote from AA or RAC...............& we'll halve it! (y)

The cost of the service is exactly the same regardless of whether I get the AA cover or not. When I drop the car off, they ask if I would like the membership or not. New Ford cars come with 3yrs AA membership anyway, my car was 13 months old when I bought it, but because it is a Ford Direct used car it came with a full 2yr warranty and 2yrs AA membership, this year would have been the first I would have had to pay for it, but as it is included with the service, it's still free. Best one is on cars 4yrs and older you can opt for £99 service and the AA membership is still included for free if you want it.

I had no idea you got this until I got my old focus serviced at an approved garage, 12 months breakdown cover for free on a then 12 year old car, when having an interim service done. Was brilliant, and they sorted us out pretty quickly when the gear cables snapped.. I'm not sorry to see the back of that car lol

The latest is that they do not know why I received notification of renewal for another year and assure me my membership will lapse on the 17th and no payments will be taken, oh and for the 5th time they promised me yet another email confirming cancellation and again it has not arrived !.

I was under the mistaken belief that I had paid by credit card but it was actually paid by debit card so keeping a close watch on that.

Another thing they are crafty with is that any time you ring them you are told your information may be used to "send you junk mail" and that if you do not wish your information to be used you have to say so at the begining of your call !

I still won't be convinced until it is after the 17th and after the way they have handled this I will never go back to the RAC.

Bit off topic but I can't see how changing providers would make a difference unless that is an admission that they are deliberately strangling your speeds.

They should always give you the fastest speed possible, since I joined Plusnet it has steadily gone up over the years and only last week the download speed doubled and the upload speed more than trebled :) .

As I live in the sticks on overhead lines it is now at the "fantastic" speed of 4.5 download and 0.9 upload.

Edit sorry for the grin Andy I know you were only trying to help.
You'd be amazed at how many people don't check it though!

Job done.

ut I can't see how changing providers would make a difference unless that is an admission that they are deliberately strangling your speeds.
Well as they used to provide 2-2.5, and when that "slipped" after taking over from Tesco, which they claimed was an "oversight" on their part, I was up to just under 4Mbs.
slowly slowly its been dropping..
Armed with some technical info ( that I didn't understand) supplied but an IT techy,
I again contacted the CEO that is Dido ( not Dildo) Dido Harding, a couple of days ago.
The speeds have been slowly increasing, tonight its 2mbs...
So I think we know the answer to that ;)

And congrats on sorting the RAC

LOL...........but you would have had to know my membership number, address, and exact date of birth to have done that ;)

What an incompetent lot !! I have just received in the post a welcome letter and membership cards.

Double checked my account as soon as I read it and nothing has been taken.
