Hi all.

On buying a new set up, which one and why

Nikon D90 18-105mm VR Nikon AF-S NIKKOR f3.5-5.6G ED

Canon EOS 50D Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 IS lens

Many thanks.

Steve

Bit pointless mate we are all going to vote for our preffered brand, go and try them both and decide which one YOU prefer!!!

Both are highly capable of producing good results......

Voted Nikon cos thats what I have and the D90 is awesome! There wont be a hung decision here!!!

Cheers MrGas

It's a question for a friend, I have no experience of Nikon or their glass, I didn't want to be bias towards Canon.

Very few of us have experience of both brands, I do because I own both systems for training. Both bodies are exceptional and good value at £550 - £600. Not so sure about the wide range zooms, bad for shooting discipline and your camera will always be heavy.

Both cameras are streets ahead of the 30d.

Don't you already have some Canon Lenses?

John

Hi John, yes, I have a 24-70 f/2.8 and the 70-200 f/4, I have got a Mark III possibly on the way too, I will keep one of my 30D's for backup though.

I was asking this for a friend in Aus but have since found out his friend has just got got a D90, so I have suggested the Nikon so they can both learn together and swap gear if needed.

Steve

Ergonomically Canon has it. If you want video the D90.

However surely the D90 is more on a par with a 550D rather than a 50D.

They're both brilliant cameras, with practice you'll be able to get excellent results from both, so hold both, and see what feels best.

(But I'm voting canon as I love my 50D :D)

Afraid there's 2 issues. Firstly, which camera will your mate like? And secondly, if he can't choose, I say because you've got a canon and can lend him a lens or 2 from time to time then there's your answer.

Still not voting though!

Not voting since I don't have experience of either camera, so will just say that your friend needs to visit a shop that stocks both setups and try them for fit and feel. Either will produce images that will satisfy most needs and certainly those of a beginner as well as having some space to "grow into", meaning that an upgrade shouldn't be needed in the near future.

Don't forget that as well as the camera and lens, the friend will need some memory and possibly a spare battery. A bag might be handy as well, as might a tripod.....

I've voted Nikon, as when I was a newbie last year everywhere that I went to get peoples opinions, was all saying the Canon equivalent would cost about £200 more. So I ordered a D90 purely for the price. I had never even seen one in the flesh then. I got it with the 18-105mm lens and also ordered the 70-300mm lens at the same time, giving a good range for a beginner. To be honest I love my D90 and have quickly got to grips with it. I was using a Fuji s9600 before that.

As mentioned, as you have a Canon it might be better for the pair of you to stick to Canon, so you can swap lens.

Neither, both of crap brands..
Bit a pointless thread as both would be fine for a newbie.

agree no good going by thge votes
as you may hate the feel of the one they pick also you may not like the menu set up GO TRY

For me, Canon as Canon has better support in software and tech for Astro photography, and the MPE65 if you're wanting to do Macro.

Otherwise, does it make much difference ?

The trouble with these threads is the immature and pointless replies they generate. Rather than read all the crud, I can offer an unbiased opinion which I can prove (photographically)....

Basically, the long and short of it is...erm, well, Nikon owners have long wullies, and Canon owners short. Long and short, see? Trust me, I have a studio.

Gary.

The ergonomically bit is covered by FITP below .

In regards to D90 it actually does compare to the 50D. The D90 is leaps and bounds ahead of the xxxD range, it's not an entry level camera. So you need to compare maybe Nikons D5000 or D60 range to a 550D.

It compares closely to a D300 in Nikons range, having a newer sensor, video, but maybe lacks in other features. Also, just has a plastic body, but you still have to put it in that bracket, not as entry level.

I missed that....

You're having a laugh....aren't you?

Lordy, I missed it too!

Hang on, hang on.... I thought you said peoples with an MAC have big wullies? Or is it that if you have a Mac AND a Nikon you have a MAHOOSIVE dingdong?

lol,
I just tied the popularity contest at 28vs 28!

Why wasn't Olympus 4/3rds included for consideration?

The benefits and advantages are legion.

What's a Nikon?

No seriously, go and have a play with them both if you can. You're buying into a system so check the ergonomics of both camera controls carefully and go with the one you're happy with.

I also tied the survey 30-30 :)
