Quick question

EN EL3 only has 2 contacts and ENEL3E for D300 has 3 to do the battery level thing, so may work but won't be showing up in the condition bit I think
 
D50 battery ( Black in colour, EN EL3 ) wont physically fit in the D300 ( or D80, D200) , but it works the other way round, the D300 battery, EN-EL3E ( grey) , will fit D50 to D300.

No the ordinary EN-EL3 wont even charge in your charger and is not compatible with the D300 even though they do fit I was told this buy a supplier who sold me an ENEL3e for my D200 and the price was good to £12 delivered from Amazon, If you want the link let me know

Just to make myself clear ... the battery I bought was the Grey one (same shape and fits) but will work in the D300 as its the EN-EL3e
