Quick question on expired film

Does expired film loose sensitivity as it gets older and if it does, any idea by how much?

Its a very complex ploynomial equation that governs the loss of light sensitivity of a film over time; and is only understood in the context of theory of particulate decay relative to relative time - absolute time being a concept beyond the comprehension of light sensitive particulate matters.

The short answer is: it will depend on how the films were preserved; if they were in a fridge; they should be Ok for a reasonable period of time
 
I'm not sure what you call reasonable period of time but they expired in 1982 :lol:

I think I read somewhere that they loose 1 stop ever 10 years which didn't seem like a lot to me
 
I think the more sensitive the film is, the quicker and greater the fall off is.
Which stands to reason really...
For instance, I'd put my house on 5 year out of date FP4 being pretty near its manufactured iso of 125, but Ilford 3200 would be a long odds outsider..
 
I've still got a few films in the freezer which is supposed to preserve them well, but haven't put them to the test. One or two must be nearly 10 years old by now....

Its a low ISO film so I think I'll shoot it over exposed by one stop as its quite old and see what happens.
 
Sounds about right for print film that's way out of date. If you've got several of the same brand and batch, shoot one roll at that then get it D&Ped to see what the results are like. Check the negs as well as the prints - if they look a bit thin, add a bit more to the exposure.
