quick question about monitors?

Hi all, Im looking for some help on how to make my pictures look like they should out the camera.

I know you get the fancy things to set your monitor but as i dont have one i was wonderin if there is a base way of going about getting it to look not that far away.

Seeing that you've got a 30D has bummed out my cheap and cheerful method but maybe you know someone with a body that's got Liveview (40D, 50D, 5D2, 7D etc) that you could borrow briefly

Set up a nice colourful target next to the monitor in question.
Use tethered Liveview to view the target whilst adjusting the monitor so that it replicates the target as closely as possible....colour, brightness etc.

for an ever so cheap quick fix, send off for the Photobox free 7x5 inch colour chart, sit this beside your monitor and play with the settings until something like the print.
