Yes
hey all,

could any one tell me what the fastest shutter speed i could have when using my D90 + sb-600 being triggered by the d90's on board flash in comander mode?

Also would i be able to use a faster shutter speed if i used a flash cord? 1/500+ or is it just not possible to go that fast with a flash?

reason i ask, i was using my sb-600 in comander mode being triggered by the on board flash, if i went above a shutter speed of 1/200 the picture would come out black. is this because of a delay between pressing the shutter release and the flash firing? or is it that teh sync is off? or something else

Basically i want to use my sb-600 with shutter speeds of 1/320 and above, is it possible and if so how?

cheers

All you need to do is set the flash to FP Sync mode in the camera menus...

Nikon FP Sync

Normally your camera will not allow a shot above the camera's synch speed which is 1/200th.

I don't use Nikon but just found that you can go to menu e5 and set the Auto FP to On and you can now increase the Sync speed to 1/4000th.

THe problem with High Speed Sync is that you drastically reduce the range of your flash.

cheers for your replys guys, i should have said in my first post that i had auto FP set to on.

I've read that if im using the onboard flash as a comander the fastest shutter speed i can have is 1/200.

Will using a flash cord instead of wireless be able to give me a faster shutter speed? with auto FP turned on ofcourse?

edit) its for a macro setup so the short range of the high speed sync should'nt be a problem.

Just picked this up on the net, but haven't tried it, so don't know if it's right or not...

If you set the pop up flash as commander and to _ _ then set the SB600 to Auto FP it should let you sync faster than the standard sync speed.

Unless you get something like a D40/50/70 or 70s you're stuck with 1/200 or 1/250 unless you enable that FP thingy. A D70 will sync to 1/8000 without enabling it, if you know how ;)

hmm, seems i maybe wrong with my last post, althought the sb-600 will sync all the way up to 1/4000th i took a shot at 1/200th and the object was blown out, i then took the same shot at 1/250th and it was massively underexposed. more than 1/3rd a stop would do. this was with the sb-600 being wirless and triggered by the d90 pop up flash.

could the problem be that im using a x2 teliconverter and a set of extension tubes??
or is it just the fact you cant sync above 1/200th in commander mode even with FP turned on?

All i want to know know is if the same thing will happen if i use the flash with a cord? i guess the only way to find out is to give it a try.

Out of interest, why do you need to sync above 1/200 anyway?

all sorts of things really, mainly macro related, catching water drops etc, i also use my camera free hand, when photographing insects 99% of the time a tripod cant be used. i want the faster shutter speeds to try and reduce camera shake.
