Apparently they're not all equal. Going to oder a 3m cable on amazon for tethered shooting. any recommendations. Belkin?

any decent brand will be fine
the cheap ones on eBay sometimes will only do charging but any 'proper' brand will do the job, other than that the only thing to think about is how sturdy you want it to be

I shoot tethered with a Lindy USB cable, decent enough brand but still good value.

Thanks Tom. seen them and as you say "value". Don't mind paying a bit more IF there's a difference, but good to know (y)

Cheers Matt, that's why I was looking at Belkin but they are stocked by PC World etc and that actually puts me off!

lindy seems to be the ticket, 89 4*s out of 104 reviews. :ty:

You don't say which camera it's for but my Nikon uses a micro USB sized cable that's not compatible with micro USB. It's more square but the cable that comes with the camera could be lengthened by using an extension. I bought the wireless module to use instead of tethering.

that'l be mini usb the type before micro usb became popular

Sorry to high jack, but can anyone recommend a decent USB to micro USB or mirco USB mains charger. I use a tablet a lot and keep killing the micro end, they get really loose. I said USB to micro USB because we have a couple of USB mains adaptors. Does the advice above apply?? Thanks

Have a look on Amazon or 7dayshop, Mike. I have a couple of Hama ones that are over a year old and which get used regularly for charging my phone - still snug.

from what i can gather mini usb is fully compatible with the D80 as it is with a lot of canon and other manufactures
https://www.tethertools.com/plugging-in/usb-compatibilty/ scroll down for mini usb

it looks like nikon have the e6 8 pin lead to do with video / audio is that what socket is on the D80 ?
I'm on holiday at the moment and don't have the D80 to hand but you're right, it does use the mini USB. The D7100 is what I have with me and uses the E6 connector but as I said above I went for the wireless adaptor because I just know I'd trip over the cable and drag the camera off the tripod, however those orange cables look a good high visibility option albeit quite pricey.

I have a cheap and cheerful 2 metre Valueline micro USB flat cable which is quite sturdy and use it for charging phones. I've only had it for a few months but it's done well so far.

It's just four cores with an overall shield. Any with that configuration will work equally well.

Steve.

and of course there are now USB, USB2 (black) and USB3 (blue) with differing speeds.

Over the years I have come to regard Belkin as a cheap and cheerful one that I avoid, if there is something better on offer. Had a few problems with their equipment which seems to have a short service life.

Quite like Lindy sourced cables that I have been using since I first discovered them around ten years ago. Good customer service too.

No it won't.

USB, mini USB and micro USB both have type A and type B plugs.

the only officially recognised mini usb plug is type B which is a 5 pin mini usb connector there are a couple of unofficial mini type B connectors used by kodak and fuji as well as other makes but as far as i am aware not by nikon on their DSLR's
typa A usb is the larger standard connector we usually see there is no mini type A connectors as far as i am aware
straight usb type B connectors are the type we usually see on printers
micro usb have A and B type connectors and A/B type known as OTG

then we have usb 3

like i said originally the type of socket on his nikon D80 is a mini usb they don't make mini usb type A of any description ( officially )
no point in confusing the matter with A or B type connectors because there is only one officially recognised mini usb connector which i known as type B but with there being no type A mini connector the fact it is a type B connector is mute to the average person who just wants a lead to connect their camera via usb

Be aware that if it's to connect to a Mac, apple hardware can be EXTREMELY fussy about USB connectors.
