Quick q on RAW

Hello all, sorry for being a bit of a thicky but when viewing my pic's taken in RAW format (in Windows Pictures and Fax Viewer) they appear on the screen in a tiny size.

Do I need to open them in a different piece of software or something as I'd like to try some HDR eventually and I understand that RAW is the best format for this.

the tiny size you see is a small jpeg embedded in the RAW file. You need to process the RAW file in a programme like ACR (Adobe camera raw) or the programme that came with your D5000

Ok thanks, is that Nikon Transfer and ViewNX then?
 
ViewNX. Nikon Transfer should open and transfer your files when you connect your camera to your pc/laptop then open ViewNX to view them.
 
You'll still need something to actually process the RAW files - ViewNX only allows very limited editing. You'll need photoshop, Lightroom, Bibble or something similar.
