Quick Nikon autofocus question

D3 .... AF-S 300mm f/4 D IF-ED .... AF-S TC-20E II Teleconverter

That makes a 600mm f/8 lens. Will it autofocus on the D3?
 
I think only the Nikon TC-14E will work with the 300mm f/4. The others are manual focus only.
 
300 F4 with AF-S TC 1.7 EII did autofocus on my D200 & 300 Stewart. Sites say that it won`t,but it sure as hell did.

Don`t know if that helps you or not.
 
I've heard it will AF if it is bright enough i.e good sunlight.
 
not sure about the TC2.0EII but the TC1.7EII definitely works on mine with the D700 and D80 before that
 
Thanks for the input, folks. But does anyone have any knowledge and/or experience of the D3?
 
It autofocused on my D200, so I can't see why it wouldn't on a D3.

Nikon doesn't shut down AF when the aperture goes over f/5.6

99% chance it'll AF fine.

Nor does Canon on a 1D-series body. ;) But you knew that. Personally I prefer the certainty that you get with Canon to the will-it-won't-it situation that Nikon give you, even if the latter actually results in the AF working (or trying to work) ore of the time.

Cheers, that's helpful. I'd been assuming that the D3 autofocus would have similar capabilities to the canon 1D-series, so it's good to get confirmation.
 
I've managed to get AF on a Nikon D50 with an old 70-300 AF-G with a Kenko 2x with is effectively f/11 at 600mm. AF always seems to try and Nikon are very conservative. They claim a 1.7x TC will not AF on a 105mm VR macro, but it does.

Nor does canon on a 1D-series body. But you knew that

No I didn't know that. I do now I guess.

Yes, I know, but my question is really about whether it will manage in reasonable light.

Canon say that the AF on a 1D-series will work at f/8. Obviously it won't work in total darkness, but there's an expectation that it will work in any reasonable light. And I think the fact that they deliberately shut down the AF on lesser bodies at f/8 reinforces that expectation. It's just a shame that Nikon chooses to make it so obscure.
 
Both the TC1.7EII and TC1.4EII AF on the 300mm f4 on my D3 if the light is good enough. Don't have the TC2 - sorry. results are better with the 1.4 though I'd say.
