I'm going to upgrade my lens (Sigma APO DG 70 - 300) in a few months after I’ve pasted my probation period at my new job.

I've been looking at ether:

70 - 200L F2.8
100 - 400L F4.5 - 5.6

Does any one use these lenses at the mo for MS?

Cheers

Andy

I use the 70-200f2.8IS and have used the 100-400IS for motorsport and both are great lenses...

The 70-200f2.8IS is much better than the 100-400 IMHO, but, 200mm isnt very long at some circuits, the addiction of a 1.4xTC to it gives an effective 98-280 f4 IS and IMO would be superior to the 100-400 in terms of speed and image quality.

70-200 probably won't come off my Mk3 all weekend whilst wandering round Rowrah Karting Track :D

Carl.

Andy tell us what type of events your covering...

I have both lenses and most of my work is rallying. One of my 1D bodies never comes off the 70-200 f2.8IS

The only bad point about your setup is the 400D you'll be using is a 1.6 crop. With full frame or 1.3 crop the 70-200 is class because @ 200 mm you can pull in a nice shot and by the time your @ 70 mm your very close.

The 70-200mm, with 1.4tc would be my answer, then a 300 or 400mm prime to complement them.

But again depending on what you do, i normally use the 300mm f4 prime at car events, and the 400mm f5.6 for bikes, and the 300mm quite often gets used with either a 1.4, if i need that extra bit more reach, or though upt till a cutain point the a cropped 400mm is better iq then the 300+1.4tc or 2xtc for some tracks with bikes. So id consider getting a 300mm f4, then a 1.4tc, then maybe a 7-200mm f4, that lot shouldnt be to far outside the bduget for a 70-200f2.8

Its by no means professional use. Just as a hobby.

Its mainly BTCC / Le Mans / EDC etc...

I've been finding the Sigma and also the canon 70 - 300 Lens very soft higher up the zoom range. Also the AF takes a year and a day :lol:

However, i am still learning this expensive hobby :D

I hope this helps.

i agree andy, ive got the sigma and the focus is too slow for rally shots so its really hit and miss with it, its also soft over about 150-200mm and i dont find the colour reproduction too good on it either, but hey its a 100sheet lens so we cant complain too much.

70-200 f2.8 is the boy IMHO! just wish i had some money for it!

Does any one know of any shops that rent lens in the Essex area.

I may give both of them ago, before pasing judgement

Thanks

Andy

But he never mentioned Rally, yes id agree the 70-200 IS f2.8 is the daddy in the zoom lens, i wouldnt have one still if werent, but at 99% of most UK track's will be bolting a 1.4 or 2xtc on it as the range isnt long enough.

For motorsport i dont think the IS is required, i never have mine switched, although i do use it for wildlife.

I would still say for track racing the 300mm f4 prime and 1.4tc is the better most cost effective answer, as the results would be that much better, the 70-200 f4 is another cracking, and a dam sight cheaper, after all you just said it isnt professional use, the only slight bennifit witrh the 2.8 is its slightly brighter view finder, and a tad quicker in very low light, and you'd lose AF with a 2xtc, but with a 300mm prime and 1.4tc you wouldnt ever have the need for a 2xtc on it.

Cheers guys :D

Right I’ve been to Jessops today to have a look at the 70-200 F2.8 and 70-200 F4

I'm very impressive with the way it produces images and the sheer image quality. The AF on this lens was stunningly quick.

I've just ordered a 1.4TC from One Stop

Now just need to have a play with a 100-400 to make my mind up.

I'm 95% sold on the 70-200L though.

Andy

i've just switched from the 100-400 to the 70-200 + 1.4x. so far i think my results are better. Photos are sharper, but it is useful to have the extra length, so i have a 400 prime too make up for it. problem is i'm always changing lenses

to be honest, whichever you choose will be OK in my opinion. swings and round abouts

Cool.

Always a good sign:D

problem is i'm always changing lenses

I have a cunning solution to that problem...

Ive got 24-70, 70-200 and 300... And Ill have them on 5d, 1dmkII and 1dmkIIn respectively.

Im current saving to buy the 1dmkIIn, No more lens changing for me. :)

Where is the best place to get a 70-200L f/2.8 from?

Also a Canon 15mm Fisheye lens

Cheers

Send a pm to kerso mate. Think carefully about the fisheye though, it's the sort of thing that's fun for 5 minutes and then never used again.

That combination may be a bit iffy on a 400D (autofocus issues)

Dean:)

Agreed, I certainly wouldn't part with what Canon want for the 15mm to use it on a crop body, you'll end up with what looks like a badly distorting wide angle.

If you want to go for a fisheye then something like the 8mm Peleng is a better bet not only is it less than a quarter of the price but it'll give a much more "fisheye" view on a crop body.

I didn't seem to have any problems in the shop testing it out

Andy

He means 400D + 100-400 + TC

Don't forget you lose 1 stops of light with a 1.4x TC, so will effectively make the 100-400 (which is already at f5.6 at the 400mm end of the zoom) an f8 at 560mm - so the lens will hunt pretty badly during AF in anything other than very, very bright sunshine.

I personally wouldn't bother using a TC with anything more than an f4 lens

ahhh yes... :embarrassed:

I'm not going for the 100 - 400.

The 70-200 F2.8 seems like its the correct choice to make. :D
