for the first time, i've got dust on my EOS 1d mkII N sensor

i selected 'sensor clean' in the menu, and it turned itself off. i took the lens of to get to the sensor, but the mirror is still there?
what am i doing wrong? does it work different to the 30d i used to get dirt on?

Janice had quite a sensor cleaning adventure.

I think you need to take the lens off first and then set off the sensor clean menu function. The mirror then comes back into position when you turn the power off IIRC.

Try selecting mirror lock up and fire the shutter on 'B' but lock the shutter open with a remote cord.

First press of the shutter lifts the mirror up - the second opens the shutter. Make sure you have a well charged battery or the camera plugged into mains power before you start.

FFS now i have an absolute ton of dust in there that wont move. its all stuck the the sensor and wasnt there a minute ago.

so, where is the cheapest place to send it to get it cleaned?

Thats not a bad deal. Don't forget you get one free clean under warranty from Canon :)

Wooooooooooosh!!
(thats the sound of something going over my head)

Janice is our resident sensor cleaning expert

With a flick of her brillo pad, your sensor will be sparkling like a new one :D

£35 is not bad at all but a micro fibre cloth, some pure alcohol and some plastic tweezer sort of thing is all you need to get it back to new.

You could get all of that for less and clean it many many times. Sure it's more effort but you can bet that days after having it done, you'll get some more dust in there. Sods law.

Gotta disagree with CT here.
The sensor cleaning function de-activates the sensor when the mirror flips up. Bulb is the equivalent of taking a picture, the sensor is charged and in theory anyway could result in attracting more dust

Oops! You're absolutely right Doddy of course. I'm gonna give myself a serious slapping right away. :embarrassed:
