Quick, everyone in here and make millions

And a book in a language I don't understand is simply a random set of black marks on a white page - nothing more, nothing less. Except those who do understand might find it a great work of literature, or a tour de force of scientific reasoning.
I agree, and i understand, i just choose not to read that book or get a hard on over some simple image, that's the point.

Fair enough, but I must admit that when you said "i simply choose NOT to get into the poncy world of Photography is high brow art, to you it might be, to me it isn't" I took it as a dismissal (in very emotive terms) of something that you had chosen to ignore without attempting to understand.

How do you know that something is a "simple image" if you don't understand it? I come back to my analogy of a book in a language (and using an alphabet) that you don't know?

I'll leave it here.

A genuine question to those who claim not to pay any attention to the pictures of 'famous photographers' or even know the names of any. What was it made you want to take photographs if not looking at photographs and being impressed/inspired by them?

I think the point is, you need to be a well known photographer to be able to inspire others

I couldn't name any famous photographer, but what pushes me and inspired me is seeing photos on places like here, Flickr, Social Media etc............ i couldn't tell you half of their names, and the ones i could no ones else would know.................... being famous has nothing at all to do with being a good photographer and inspiring others

It probably was that - but you don't need to know who the photographer was to be impressed.

I would personally try to find out but it's not essential.

But can you name any famous contemporary musicians?

Yes, I can... but I wasn't talking about me.

But again, you could be a musician and be inspired by music you hear on the radio without having a clue who wrote or played it.

I suppose you don't need to know the names of photographers, but it's beyond me why anyone wouldn't want to. If only to find more of their work to look at.

Looking through my Flickr feed i could name you a dozen or so photographers who inspire me, but that would mean next to nothing to the majority of members on here as they are not famous names (at least i'm pretty sure they aren't), but i don't need to remember their names to be inspired by them, i see their photos several times a day when i log onto Flickr and flick through my feed

I think a lot of it is an age thing. I'm 27 and first picked up an SLR in 2007. By the time I began to take photography seriously, the internet was already full of websites like Flickr and DeviantArt where I could see literally millions of images from thousands of photographers in one place, wherever I was. So many of them were really great that I never really took to following many individual people.

I now shoot film almost exclusively, and since then I've picked up on a few film photographers that I am interested in and whose work inspires me (Ben Horne, Luke Chisholm and Nick Carver come to mind). I'm sure this is because there are much less film users than digital, and in actively looking for film photos on the internet I have come across these people.

Of course looking at photos made me want to be a photographer - but it didn't matter a damn who took them, only the images mattered. I often hear that we should know about the work of XYZ or their life or their motivation, I don't give a toss for any of that hence I also don't care whether they are famous or not

I've found wandering into exhibitions interesting, even for subjects I don't normally shoot.
When in Rome a couple of years agoi there was a huge exhibition of Arturo Ghergo, nope I didn't know of him either. Turns out he was a famous italian photographer of the stars, with a huge display of stunning portraits with great lighting. Really interesting

Wear my ignorance with pride!!!!!, ignorance suggests a lack of knowledge/understanding, i simply choose NOT to get into the poncy world of Photography is high brow art, to you it might be, to me it isn't.

Exactly. You're ignorant of it, and seem proud of the fact.

He loves me really. It's all an act.

You got to love a thread like this, and in my opinion see this typical British reaction to it; "I smell b******t", "His pictures are s***", "Is ok when you have a high value market to sell into", and on and on and on....

Yes of-course there are gross generalisations, but that is the point as the vast majority just doesn't pay attention to the basic elements. It is industry independent, it is unrelated to how much money your clients have etc. But it is also a choice, a choice anyone who is in business has got to make. Way to often the focus is on the wrong things, or decisions aren't being thought through.

No I think it is good that posts like those go up, and perhaps people remember why they are doing what they are doing.
