Can anybody quickly tell me how far the 3/8UNC thread protrudes from their tripod legs? I'm knocking up a quick adapter for mine in work and forgot to take the dimension of the hole I need to drill.

Thanks in advance

On my Manfrotto monopod the thread protrudes by 5.5mm, on my Giottos tripod, the thread is on reversible studding with 3/8" on one end and 1/4" on the other, the default protrusion measures 7.25mm on mine.

Tim, are you doing a centre column removal? I just did one on my small Gitzo and TBH, the length the protrudes up from the top plate and into the tripod head is normally not all that important, within reason. As long as it's somewhere between 7-15mm it should screw into the tripod head without problem. I think mines close to the 15mm end.

I'm making a lightweight gimbal head similar to that of the lensmaster RH-1. All I have to do now is make an adapter to go from tripod thread (can either be 1/4 or 3/8 as mine has both) to a longish 3/8 thread to accommodate the width of the flat bar and a handwheel nut. Tried looking on net for one, but could only find short adapters.

I'm with you. That's why I did my own mod on mine.
