quick and possibly stupid question

Yes
I'm thinking of buying the canon 300mm f4. I'm hoping to use it with a monopod. As the lens has a tripod mount on it will it screw straight into the monopod or will I need a tripod head?

Apologies if this is (as I suspect) a daft question.

Thanks :)

Most monopods (all manfrotto) have a 1/4" and 3/8" screw that should screw directly to the lens

And as has been said many times before the only stupid question is the one you don't ask

No, you don't need a head, you could just screw the monopod into the lens foot and away you go. BUT, it won't be quick release, you would need a head for this. Also, you would need to be careful about how far you tilted the monopod forward or backward, as gravity could take over and the whole lot goes crashing to the ground. With a head fitted, this swivels and tilts and the monopod stays upright. I usually put the strap around my neck to prevent this.

As above yes you can screw the monopod directly to the lens support, but I'd recommend a head on the monopod - gives you more flexibility and also a quick release plate.

Takes a little getting used to a monopod I've found in some situations, but is worth it...
