Quite some time ago, my son lost the original EN-EL15
battery that I never use anyway, so I did not bother.

The problem is that I can't update the firmware unless a
a battery is in the camera, freshly charged batteries in the
grip won't work!

I don't hope to buy an original Nikon EN-EL15 as the cost
is too high for something I will use only for updates.

QUESTIONS:

Do you know of a work around?
Will a cheaper third party pack allow the update?
Thanks in advance!

you probably won't notice a difference.

Thanks for that Steven.

I actually have these:

A— 1,01
B— 1,02
L— 1,006

My 800E performs very well at this point but I will investigate
what's new in the updates.

I thought the best thing about that update was that it enabled "trap focus"... not that I have used it since.

Is that all, really?

I am sure that this feature would be useful in predictable
sports shot as there are many in all sports but in wildlife
photography, where things are far less predictable, I see
less use for it.

Also I think it was for compatibility for a couple of new lenses. The 800 mm comes to mind.

About as far as it comes for most of us! :D

Us, in this case, doesn't include me! :(
I have the 600 and I think I will never justify a
15k+ lens in my operations.

And that would probably be why I haven't used it...
I've tried to use it for things like little birds landing on a perch, but the AF is too slow to recognize the subject in time.

If the birdie doesn't take off immediately
you should be able to take it I think as it
is a similar situation as in sports: a predict-
able spot. No?

On the perch is no problem... in flight coming in for landing is quite a bit more challenging (manual zone focus works better than trap focus).

Which ever lens I use, AF-C @ 1 point permit me to
follow and track a bird during the whole movement…
if I started at the right time that is! :)

Nope! I gave up on these and they are not
to be seen at the marsh…

Cool second take BTW!
