Question on Re-sizing for printing

Hi,

Looking for some advice please.

I have over 200 images from a recent family event that I would like to get printed on Photobox in 7" x 5". I have converted all the files from RAW to jpeg, but the individual file sizes are still over 5MB and actual image dimensions are around 39" x 58". I could upload the all the files as they are and then crop them on Photobox (or use the scale to fit option), but being on a slow internet connection, it would take me hours to upload all the images on to Photobox's server.

So, question is, can I re-size my images to print at 7 x 5? If so, what should I be changing in PS Elements - pixel dimensions or document size? Is it simply a case of just amending the document sizes to 7 x 5? Or will that potentially distort the images?

All advise truly appreciated! Thanks.

If you select 7x5 crop in PS elements does it leave you with a cropped image?

I have a canon 30d and if I select 7x5 I have to crop the image, it does not resize or it will distort the image.

If I recall with Photobox if you select scale to fit you will have a white border around your images.

I think you will have to crop each one, if you want to fill a 7x5 correctly.

Thanks Tom - I'll try that and see what happens.
Just had a look at the total album file size and it's adding up to over 800mb so I do need to find a way of reducing the size!

As another option can't you send them on a disc for them to be printed?

I guess I could and that would get rid of the file size problem, but it won't get rid of the image size issue. They will just apply the standard 7 x 5 crop to all the images and it will just end up chopping off people's heads/arms etc from the image. So I guess I'll have to actually go through each image on PSE first and apply the 7 x 5 crop myself to ensure I am happy with the crop rather than letting Photobox decide.....

Damn - never realised printing was complicated! Most of my images are shared online so haven't really given much thought to printing in the past

Now start to shoot with cropping in mind and you will see a whole new world out there.
