Question from a newbie

In a word - quality, the lens you're looking at buying is a Kia Ce'ed, the lens you've lonked to is an Audi RS4.

Build quality
fast and accurate AF motor
constant 2.8 aperture.

Is it worth the extra? If you need the quality and speed it's worth every penny, if you don't it's a great big waste of money.

Hi Kevin & welcome

Pretty much what Phil has said really

And yep, Photography can be expensive, especially once the bug bites.

Not sure what a Kia is Phil but I take it you mean ford versus RR

Forgot the Welcome forum bit I'll go there now:)

close enough -welcome to the money pit that is photography

Phil is spot on And welcome to the forum. Oh and say goodbye to your wallet. Photography is an expensive mistress that likes new and shiny things on a regular basis. Most of which you don't need but can't seem to say no too.

Hi Phil my missus has the kia cee'd, it's a diesel automatic estate and its a cracking car. It has cruise control and electric everything, and all the added bits and bobs. I drive it more than my own car, and it's one of the best cars I have driven.

Although I do admit I would rather have that lens more than the Kia Cee'd ;)

Nothing wrong with them, work perfectly well for a good price - so does the kit lens.

This is the best bit of advice I now have that I WISH I had before starting out at Christmas...yeah, I'll just buy the camera, I said. Now look...I have bags, and tripods, and remotes, and additional lenses...

And why is it there is always 1 more lens you need? :-)

GAS!

I recently got the bug back, having had a 25 year break, and have to watch the pennies whilst wanting all the shiney things on offer.

I got the Nikon 55-300 lens you mentioned in your first post and have to say that, for the price, it's a very nice lens. I've managed to get some nice shots with it, the only picture in my gallery on this site was taken with it if you want to have a look.

thats the same ebay shop I boght my kit from, I've just started, bought a sony Alpha A200 with a 18-70 sony lens, waiting for better weather to get out and about

To all newbies, note Mike's plurals!!! You almost certainly will end up with more than one bag, more than one tripod , more than one lens, possibly more than one body even.

If you're very lucky and strong willed, you might keep kit to a minimum but the chances are that you'll want more. Then more, etc. Even when you have all you want, you'll possibly want better.

GAS (Gear Aquisition Syndrome) is a harsh mistress and will eat into your available funds if you let her. Anyone who tells you that photography is a poor man's hobby will probably also tell you that tattoos don't hurt - they're fibbing!
