Question for the Cooks!

Our dual fuel cooker (gas hob, electric dual ovens) is on its last legs. We have always had electric or dual fuel and they seem to last five or six years, although we have had loads of problems with this last one (Hotpoint). We are thinking about getting a gas cooker this time. My wife does a lot of baking she is looking for advice from anyone who has gone from an electric to a gas oven.

Electric fan ovens are much better for baking. I've gone the other way... I wouldn't go back to a gas oven now. I expected it to be worse but it's better by miles. Much more even results. Gas hob is very good though. Instead of having a duel fuel cooker how about getting a separate gas hob and electric under counter oven? This way if one bit goes wrong you can replace that without having to dump the whole lot.
 
That would be a good idea but our kitchen is very small and I'm not sure it would fit in. However I will do a bit of research.

My wife bakes a lot too, we have a Bosch electric built in fan double oven and gas hob in the worktop next to it.
Our kitchen is also quite small, but the oven housing has a cupboard above it and the microwave lives in the one below it
 
Another fan ( sorry :D ) of the gas hob and separate electric oven.
I switched more years than I can remember from a gas oven, and I never looked back :)
 
Same here.... electric fan oven so much better than gas but gas hob essential.
 
Electric fan oven and gas hob is definitely the way to go. I also have the Bosch seperate fan oven and gas hob (LPG as there's no mains gas), in a small kitchen so it's only a single oven. The oven is just great - use exactly the temperature/time called for and it works every time, unlike every other gas or non fan electric oven I've used. If your wife is baking then a higher level oven in a housing makes life so much easier. The oven/hob are about 9 years old now.
 
I can't remember the last time I fitted a gas oven.
As above, electric fan ovens and gas or electric hobs. If electric, they have tended to be ceramic or induction hobs.
 
Looks like it will be too much hassle to have separate units. The only logical place for the oven and hob is where they are now, but as a freestanding unit. Would need mounting cabinet and new worktops etc <sharp intake of breath> :)
 
Dual fuel stand alone here. Gas hob for controllability (and boiling water should there be a power cut!) and electric oven for consistency. IIRC it's a Kenwood and replaced an Indesit that we had for about 20 years.

A slide in unit will be fine :)

There are many very good ones. The last one we had was some 20 years ago in a flat.
We still use the cookery book that came with it. (Leisure was the make)
 
Agree with the others. We had a gas cooker with gas hob, gas grill and gas oven. We bought our first house and it had a siemens cooker. Gas hob. Electric fan oven and mini oven/grill. The oven works fantastically for baking but grilling is a nightmare. Cheese on toast, for example, takes forever.

That is the only down side, I wouldn't say that it takes for ever, but I still say ( after all these years) that gas grilled cheese on toast is far Superior :thumbs:
 
Just to put a contrary view, I think gas ovens are better for baking bread. It may be the moisture. But I accept it’s a niche case.
 
We swapped to an electric over years ago and never looked back, also swapped to an Induction hob and wouldn't have anything else now - very easy to use and control (oh and easy to clean).
 
have to say I agree with a good electric fan oven.
changed ours last year and cooks far better for less power.
old cooker was 2200watts and new one 1800watts

We also have an old but great gas hob and think its the bees

We have a rangemaster gas hobs, two fan ovens. Wouldn't go backwards.
Why are you going through so many electric ovens? Over aggressive cleaning damaging the heating elements?

No - The heating elements are behind panels. Have just consulted the boss and in fact we have had only three in 40 years - the first two being fully electric. The current model is five years old and we have had a few problems with it. I think we had a Friday model! Having said that we haven't yet found anything we like better so could end up buying the same model again - but with an extended warranty!

We swapped to an electric over years ago and never looked back, also swapped to an Induction hob and wouldn't have anything else now - very easy to use and control (oh and easy to clean).

I've always been a bit wary of those in case I dropped something heavy on them. But we prefer a gas hob.
 
Ah ok, only we had our over professional cleaned and it blew both elements on next use!

To get round this if using an electric oven put a shallow tray in the bottom of the oven and put a small amount of water in there :) Obviously bake the bread above that ....

Yes that is a concern, but once you get it in your head after a while, you kind of forget about it.

Not had any issues with our 2 induction hobs we’ve had in the 15-20 years.

My gas hob is glass, with 4 individual cast iron pan stands,
Had this one about 10 years, its taken a fair bit of punishment, and so far so good, the only problem was a couple of the cast iron pan stands didn't bounce when dropped,
but I did manage to source some replacements.. eventually ..

Same as after cleaning your oven with oven cleaner. Put a tray of water in on highest heat and let the steam remove anything that's left so your food doesn't have a smell/taste.

Yes, I do that though even better is to put a tray in the bottom of the oven while it’s heating up and then, after putting bread in, chuck a cup of water into the bottom tray - instant steam.

Our present oven is an indesit and it too has uneven heat distribution, though the previous fan oven (Thorn IIRC) was excellent. I wouldn't want another ceramic/halogen type hob again, but induction is an excellent alternative to gas.
 
Not if you use a dutch oven inside your electric oven.
Yes, I do that too. There is also a method to get a cast iron casserole at the oven temperature and swiftly put a no-knead dough in and swiftly lid it and return to oven.
