A quick question for all you network experts out there please ?

I've recently upgraded my Virgin Router from a 1GBe unit to a 2.5GBe one. However this is currently connected to just a 1GBe unmanaged network switch. If I just replace the network switch from the current 1GBe unit to a 2.5GBe one, will my two macs which are located upstairs and connected by Ethernet back to the switch in the study downstairs be able to negotiate at the full 2.5GBe speeds with my QNAP NAS which is also located in the study and connected directly to the switch (albeit currently the 1GBe unit) - please see the sketch below. BTW, all cabling is currently Cat 6a

I have other items that are currently connected to the switch which are only Gigabit ethernet speeds only, so will these "slower" devices slow down the entire network, or only the connection speed to and from these devices when trying to access them over the network ? I hope this makes some sense ?

Yes, in that setup the 2 Mac's should connect at 2.4GBe speeds.
Connecting a slower speed device does not slow down devices that aren't trying to communicate with it.

Many thanks.

Both Macs are labelled as being 10Gb in the image so they'll be connecting at 2.5Gb on that switch as mentioned above.
