Yes
Scenario: You have photographed a wedding and are in the position to show your client the 50 pics you have edited. Having put them onto disc do you?
a) have copyright written over each picture
b) save them all with a low res and low dpi

Either way lets say the client wants all 50 on various media. You make the sale and all is happy. Now the client suddenly changes their mind and decides they want all pictures on a disc only. No big problem but I wondered if and how much you charge for copyright transfer as blatantly you're going to be missing a trick here if not prepared.

I recall a few years back someone treated me to a professional shoot and I was offered the pictures on a dongle for a total of £600 but they stated I would be unable to print them.

a) what dpi and res would I need to make the pictures still look good on a laptop for the client to see but would look awful if printed even at 6x4 ?

I hope this question makes sense as by just dishing out discs to clients I would be losing money big time and trying to google copyright transfer cost just gives me options from £6k to £60k

I'm just looking to safeguard a way that I can print for the client but also a way for them to have a copy for their pc (but unable to print)

Any help or ideas please, please note this is a fictitious example at the moment but may happen in the future if I'm starting up in this business one day

1. they never get the copyright
2. they never get the copyright
3. they never get the copyright

They get a licence to print and use non commercially

50 images seems very few

Ok that makes sense and 50 was just an example.

So you shoot a wedding, and they want the pics all on a disc with no requirement from you to print them. How do you cost it? As had you had printed them some would be different sizes etc

I kind of thought about covering my cost entirely from the outset but then they may not require all the pics? It's all a little confusing so would like to know how you guys play it out

I have a day rate, that includes the disk. Al customers want the disk, so just make sure your day rate is high enough to provide it. That stops all of the negotiation and prating about

Or definitely make sure that the exact costs and what they get after is clearly stated in your signed agreement with the couple. Also that any extras are chargeable.
