Question for all the baldies...

This was something I was thinking about the other day as it has got to that point in the year where beanies just get you a WTF look (although the Ma5da racing drivers will complain saying they can't see me).

So far the BUff looks like the best solution for me, short of finding some lightweight beanies.

Buffs are great!! I have several, get to keep ole head nice and protected and look like a pirate at the same time, what could be better :naughty:
 
The bandana thing is all well and good (and I do have them and use them sometimes as they are good for running around shooting things because they don't fall off quite so easily) but it doesn't stop the tops of your ears, nose and back of your neck getting fried...
 
The problem with baseball hats is the tops of your ears get burnt if you have short hair.

got a cowboy style hat at cadwell a few years ago. look at the marshals they are out in the sun all day, quite a few had similar headgear at oulton over the weekend.
 
Really need to find a better option than a backwards baseball cap.
like the boonie style, at least the brim will move easily when you use the camera.

Guess im going to have to hunt round and find some one who sells em bigger than a 61.

61 is what - a 7 1/2. Tilley do hats in all sizes, just under £50 though but they last for ever. Something like a T5?

Cheers will have a butchers at those.
Could only wear Shoei bike lids since there biggest size was the best fit.
amazing how many companies "size 61" was so different.

Need to hunt for some light weight, UV resistant long sleeve tops as well.
The joys of suffering with MS and not being able to handle the heat any more.
 
There are quite a lot of difference in actual sizes even though the labels read the same!

Its something to do with the country of origin and their anthropoligical head shapes I think! A Russian size 60 is different to a German size 60 and waaaay different to a Bulgarian size 60 and the Chinese's idea of 62 is a joke.

Unless you know what you are buying, I'd really suggest going into a shop and trying it on.

(that is definitely true for crash helmets where a a good fit is the difference between life and death!)

BTW, just because I saw it, looks like us hat wearers are hip and cool 8)

Another shout for Tilley hats here, fairly indestructable and keep the sun from your neck as well as out your eyes.
 
Hi Been shaving my dome now for 12 yrs, don,t like the horseshoe style or the comb over from under the armpit.No matter how much or how high a factor cream I applied it just sweat out,and I ended up pealing my head off from my eyebrows backwards. Use a sports type spray like Piz Buin active. I apply it first thing and top up after lunch and never have a problem even if I go swimming.:clap:
 
Buffs are great and been using them years for mountain biking

There is on configuration missing on their demo though and my favourite, foreign legion stylee
Have even been known to rinse them in cold water which keeps the noggin cool for ages

Currently using urban camo design, well cool for a thinning on top old git
 
I'm boring, and subscribe to the back-to-front baseball cap theory. It's probably the most practical though as the peak protects the back of my neck.
 
I know what you mean about the baseball cap Tony, you look a prat with it backward and the peak is in the way normally. So this weekend I bought a fishermans hat from Aldi for £2.50 and it's one of the best things I have got in ages. Stood outside all Sunday without any problems, it's may not be the most fashionable thing but my bald head is not burnt.

Never noticed it was on and I did not over heat.

I use factor 45 sun cream also.
 
If you don't care too much about how you look, get a lightweight t-shirt, have the collar of it just above your eyes, fold the rest of the length over your head so it covers your neck, and use the sleeves to tie it in place, covers your head and neck well.

It is a tried and trusted method.
 
I have worn a white rock hat when shooting in the past, and don't remember having any problems. The sell them is Cotswold so you can go and try them on first too. They also apparently come in multiple colours and I've worn mine for weeks at a time in hot climes for fieldwork and there is no chance of any sun getting through.

An amry surplus Shemagh (like a bedouin head scarf) is good, covers the head ears mouth and chin. Looks a bit dodgy in the UK though.

Oi!:lol:

I hate wearing hats, and most look stupid on me, however I quite like the White rock one (I have olive green), however I wouldn't be seen dead in it anywhere other than the "wilderness", and I think that is the problem with almost all of the hats in this thread.:lol:

(Although a white white rock may be fine for shooting cricket?)
 
Does it really matter about "looking good"??

I mean without some sort of protective clothing you will come back with at the very least a red peeling head, at the worst skin cancer!
 
I have a couple of buffs, but I prefer a peak to shade the eyes so more often than not I use a baseball cap which is fine for landscape oriented shots, if I move the camera vertically I swivel the cap peak to the rear.
 
I was watching the Gadget Show the other day and they sent one of the presenters off to Morocco. He had a had made for him there.

This hat would be ideal for photographers. It was completely brimless. It looked vaguely like a fez but only about 1/3 of the height and no tassel.

Like the image below but his was plain red and without the fancy embroidery.

I use a ventilated Ranch hat for summer and solid for winter. They are Aussie made purchased in New Zealand. As you state the brim of the hat sits high enough up not to hinder the camera. It protects my bald bit and at the same time protects the back of my neck which is also prone to getting burnt in fierce sunlight. Tried sunblock on bald bit and neck when out in Aussie got busy taking shots and forgot to refresh blocker. Ended up with sore neck and a blister on bald patch big enouh to inflate. Swear by Ranch Hat now:)

new to all this malarky, but how about a sherlock holmes hat, but scissor out the peak, that way your ears a coverd and so is the back of the neck, though I wouldn't personally be seen dead wearing one :D
 
Being follicly challenged myself and quite fair I do tend to wear a floppy hat when in the sun mowing and the like but for protection Riemann P20 is fantastic. Honeymooned in Cuba a few years ago and due to this amazing stuff came back looking like I'd spent a fortnight in a dark cellar, whiter than when we went !!!

Doesn't wash off even if you swim and last all day.

Just make sure you don't miss a patch.
