ok so heres the thing. my girlfriends a photographer, im an amateur astronomer (technically incorrect as im a lunar and planetary guy rather than stars). i was curious how well digital slrs perform at low temperature.

if i were to stick a 450d on the back of my mak for long exposures on cold nights, would the performance be affected much?

cheers,

joel

A couple of years ago I was out shooting the lunar eclipse and it was a pretty cold night.... my (then) 350D's batteries lasted next to no time in that cold....

Pretty much as long as you are only talking cold UK temps, the batteries will be the only problem.

Keep your spares inside you clothing to keep them warm for as long as possible is the best tip....

the only thing that will really effect the camera is the long exposure. the longer the exposure the hotter the sensor will get, and will create noise on the image.

I went to a seminar on astrophotography and thats one reason they love to either use film camera's or anything over 2minutes.

Or they will use whats called a CCD camera which is essentially a digital SLR camera sensor which is water cooled to ensure longer shutter times with reduced noise.

This is what I got told anyway.
