Hi,

Who can tell me which London Museum offers the best photo opportunities, both in regard to content and the architecture of the building? I'd be using a 40D rather than a P&S, so keep that in mind too.

Thanks!

I think the natural history museum entrance is great. hasn't it that great stairwell and columns?

Unless things have changed none of the main museums in London have ever permitted interior photography - if only to ensure that if you want an image of an exhibit you have to buy it from their shop.

As far as architecture is concerned the outside of the Hatural History museum is worth a few snaps as there is a lot of Victorian gothic detail.

Oops, never realised that, nor, by the looks of the last time I went to the NHM, did anyone else :) The NHM is the one with the 2 very grand staircases and huge entrance hall.

Natural history museum is astonishing inside as well! Well worth a visit!

Here's some I got this year

When I visited I explicity asked if I could take photos :) and the answer was 'yes'

In my experience, it is always wise to ask permission, you usually have to sign a form to say that they are for your own use, and not to be sold on.

Also consider the Victoria & Albert Museum- you're allowed to photograph in there, including all exhibits-I think there's a ban on flash in some areas, but some good material to be had.

I took shots in the Natural History earlier in the year, just about everyone there had a camera and was snapping away for all they were worth. I don't recall seeing any signs.

Of course commercial use of the shots is a different story....

British Museum

Taking photographs in the Museum
Hand-held cameras, including cameras fitted with flash bulbs or electronic flash units, may be used for private purposes in the galleries unless otherwise indicated.

Private photography in the galleries requiring the use of a stand, special lighting or other equipment is only permitted by prior arrangement with the Broadcast Unit. You must apply for permission at least ten working days beforehand, indicating which objects you proposed to photograph and the galleries in which the objects are situated.

BM is my choice heppers. I'm sure its part of the planned route anyhow so we can still drop in even if its not raining!!

Oh...one more thing.....dont forget to bring a fat wallet as I only drink champagne with lunch ;)

You can take photos inside the British Museum if you go to the desk and ask for a Pass. I was an Architecture Student then though and had valid reasons and ID to show them that I was doing a project on the roof there. I was even allowed to use a tripod, but even then i kept getting asked by all the security guard one after another as I move around inside, and i had to show my pass and explain my story every few minutes.

Clearly things have changed in the 30 years or so since I have visited any of the above museums!

Another architecturally interesting area is the Maritime museum in Greenwich. Part of the building (The Queen's House) was one of Inigo Jones's first masterpieces.

There is the added attraction of the Royal Observatory nearby (although carrying a lot of kit up the very, very steep hill is not advised for anyone who does not have high fitness levels). The view from the top in front of the observatory is outstanding and well worth the climb.

The Old Royal Naval College is also in the area right next to the river and is an outstanding example of the baroque style on a grand scale.

You can barely move in the Tate Modern for all the SLRs flying around the place!

Yeah, I know, but you can't help your past. At least you've started to amend your ways by hanging out with me now! :p

Having been reminded by the mention of Bankside, If you can co-ordinate with the (rare) open days, Battersea Power Station is well worth a visit.

Lookie Here

Was in the Science museum a few months back - photography was allowed everywhere, except for Mika Hakkinen's McLaren F1 car, which had a "no photographs" sign on it for some strange reason . . .
