question about max image file size

I have taken some shots that I want to upload here and I have Potatoshopped them and reduced to 800 pix on longest edge.

Simple enough, but they are still over 400KB and to upload to my gallery here I need to reduce to under 200KB.

I have tried making them 600 px and still too big. I am saving as max (12) Jpeg quality as I want to retain sharpness.

Do you people normally save at a lesser quality? How do you post your 800px images and make them under 200KB?
 
Save at a lower quality, I normally save at 9 and my images normally come out at around 150-200KB. :)
 
I use Paint Shop Pro. I first reduce the file to 800 pixels on the longest side.

Then 'Save As' a jpeg which brings up the jpeg file compression settings box. Adjust the compression slider until the size is 200 kb (usually just under) then Save.

That is correct but you may get complaints if your huge files are on a slow host and take ages to be seen :)

Also good to warn people on slow connections if there are a few large file size images in the post.
 
Can anyone tell the difference between a Jpeg saved at 10 quality rather than 12?

Probably not. It all depends on what is in the picture. Some things take compression better than others. Loads of fine detail like grass and leaves filling the frame will be hard to make a small file and still look good. Lots of blue sky and a calm sea might still look fine with a tiny file size.
 
I usually save mine at about 7 quality, or medium using the "save for web" feature, at 800px the difference isn't that noticable in a good image IMO. Plus I put them on flickr and the lower quality combined with the smaller size makes them pointless in case anyone stupid enough tries to use them for their own means (not that they would :cuckoo: )
 
Annoying thing about save for web in PS is that it strips the exif... another reason I don't use PS.

You can still "save as" in PS and use the "jpeg reduction" slider to get the same effect, leavining in the EXIF data

I find "save for web" a bit more convenient. It all depends what I am doing though
 
When saving to host on the forum I just do the the following in photoshop:
1) resize the picture
2) file/save as, them call the file name ........small
3) reduce the quality slider until i see the number below the 200k limit (usually about 9 to 11 depending upon the image)

Never had a problem unless I've done something daft like forgeting to reduce the slider, then remembering to change it the next time I save something.
