Hello, I'm a total newbie when it comes to photography, but i'm trying to learn :)

Well my question is this, what would be the best way to edit this picture so it doesn't blend together.

What would you recommend ? Tips,Critique and everything else is welcomed.

Thank you in advance.

It looks soft and you've cropped out the feet. Have another go and keep practicing before worrying about editing. Look at the light and see what effect it has on your subject, such as shadows/hi lites.

Shooting from the other side would have helped a lot as shooting into the sun has left you with the glare from the puddles and that's caused the definition of the dogs hair to disappear. It would also mean the dog's better lit and would give you more of his details.
Is it a crop from the original? only reason I ask is that it would be better if the dog's feet had been in view as well.

As for editing to improve it, I'm not sure, but there's probably someone else that can help on that.

Oh, not to forget ........ welcome! There's loads of advice available on here (the search function's great).

Thanks Nigel for the fast reply! Will keep practicing.

Also, Madhouse no it's not a crop, just not that well taken photo. My doggy is quite fast and always running around and its quite hard to actually get her to stop or look at you! But will try to improve :)

Yeah the advice here is amazing, i have looked over a couple of articles.

Nice pup :).

I would say you have focused just slightly behind the dog and also you are shooting into the light.

What camera do you have? If its a DSLR are you aware of the different focusing methods i.e. one shot/ servo/ AI?

Always think of the background, this one is not very nice, and because the dog has a rather dark face, particularly around the eyes, over expose by a half to one stop.

Thanks Donki :)

I'm using Nikon D60, i'm not pretty sure what focusing methods are we talking about here. Like i said i'm quite new to photography =) So still reading up on stuff.

Hmm, ill try to do some more shots at different angles and will try to pick a better background. Thanks!

Hi and welcome Yuri:)

Also try to get lower so you shoot from the dogs level.

Hey Psi :) Thanks for the warm welcome.

So it's perfectly normal to get down and dirty for a good shot? Probably a silly question, but still!

I did not try it because i thought it would be totally weird :D Guess i was wrong.

Down and dirty is good:)
I've lain in mud, rivers, the sea when needed.

Hehe, that's what you call dedication!

I looked over some shots i've taken ground level. Actually had a couple, just forgot about them.

Here is one of them.

like the others have said basically. Watch the light, get the whole doggy in the frame and try to focus on the eyes/face.

That second one is much better, see how you have the light on her coat - overcast days are often much better for photography than really bright ones as the clouds act as a giant softbox and the difference in shooting level rather than from above.

Always try and focus on her nearest eye if you can - I do know how difficult this is with dogs as they are one of my favourite subjects and their nose frequently gets in the way.

Never expect to come home clean if you are shooting dogs :)
