Im in a quandry over my sigma 120-300 2.8, i feel that on my D300 with its crop factor it too long for the local football that i shoot. so im toying with either getting a D700 so the siggy is what it says on the tin eg 120-300 or should i keep my D300 and get a 70-200 2.8 vr.

so many options in my head im going crazy with what to do.

Are you shooting under 7s i.e. tiny pitches?

Can't you sit a bit further back?

Oh one or two smilies is fine by the way

usual size pitch but there is a meter high boarding 1.5m from pitch edge and then another 2.5m boarding approx 2m behind the first, thats 3/4 around the pitch! so i cant get any further back if i tried. i will take a few pics this wed night and post so you can see what im saying!

Not the best of pic but the linesman is basically right up next to the first hoarding and seen in the background is the second hoarding!

I still thought a 120-300 would be perfect even on a crop camera.

300mm on a D300 is perfect for matches on a normal sized pitch

With the zoom aswell you should be fine

are you saying 120mm on a crop camera is far too long for a football pitch length???

I can't get my head around that

Les

120mm (don't forget the crop factor as well) is certainly too long for when the action finds it's way towards the final third, and corner, of the pitch where the photographer is sitting, particularly at lower levels where you can be much closer, and the pitches are smallers. A particular disadvantage will come should a player decides to celebrate in front of you as well.

im finding as i follow 1 team on the pitch that they play at the 12o-300 on my d300 is too much as explained in earlier posts,

i have to agree with Aperture87 in everything he says.

Could you sit on the side?

im sitting as far back as i can now so the only option is sit around the half way line, then that cuts down what you take action wise! havent got the funds to keep the siggy and get a 70-200 so i have the best of both worlds. maybe my numbers will come up on the euromillions tonight then i wont have to worry lol

i have tried sitting on the 18yrd line which i have to say was better but the furthest back i can get from the corner flag is approx 2m, if anyone has been to the ipswich wanderers pitch they will understand how close to the pitch we are! i would go as far to say its not exactly safe for the players as if they are in for a tackle full tilt then they run the risk of colliding with the 1m high board around the pitch! Its that close!

Well i sold my siggy for a 70-200vr 2.8 so we will see how that goes next week!

I don't know if it is that big a mistake though for local football, I use my 70-200 and cope just fine with it

Its all about what you want to cover at a game. If there is no goal mouth action and you are in a fixed position near the box, then the 70-200 is no good. However if you have the freedom to roam round the pitch during play then the 70-200 comes into its own, especially if you are at the right end when goal mouth action is in abundance.

I personally would have kept the 120-300 if you only had one body, but like I said if you are free to roam, then the 70-200 or the 120-300 are both suitable.

Aye could be right, just thinking what Tug says as well about being able to roam about as well, and in good light could stick a 1.4x on as well, i personally would have stuck with the 120-300mm though.

I have the luxury of having a free roam of ground, so im very lucky from that aspect! Im just taking the action for 1 team so i will tend to be at the end there attacking, but i appreciate all the comments and hopefully be able to in the future to pick up a prime. i do have a 1.7x that i can use if i need to!
